First of all, I want to say that I am so sorry I haven't kept this group as active as I had hoped.
It has been a bumpy back-to-school season for me, and I know that's no excuse, because I also know that it has been a bumpy start for many of you. And that is exactly WHY I created this community in the first place!
I also realized that I haven't properly introduced myself to many of you.
My name is Jennifer, and I am the founder of this crazy initiative called Teachers for Peace!
I grew up in Mexico City, studied Educational Psychology, and eventually made my home in Argentona, a little town outside Barcelona, Spain.
I've been teaching English for over 18 years, and for the past 15 years I've run my own language school, Tandem Escola d'Idiomes. I absolutely fell in love with teaching, with the English language, and especially with helping students discover their confidence and bring out their inner English-speaking monsters!
Then, in February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine.
Like so many people around the world, I watched the news feeling helpless. I reached out to a Ukrainian teacher I had met through an international teaching community and asked her what I could do to help.
Her answer was simple. Keep the children busy. Give them something positive to focus on.
And that's how Teachers for Peace began on March 1, 2022.
What started with a few teachers offering free English lessons on Zoom has grown into something I could never have imagined. Together, we have delivered over 4,000 free lessons, reached more than 700 learners, and brought together over 70 volunteers from more than 20 countries. Today, we're working with learners in Ukraine, girls in and from Afghanistan, and communities affected by conflict in Syria.
But here is something I have learned along the way.
Teachers need support too.
We give so much of ourselves to our students, our classrooms, our families, and our communities. Sometimes we forget that we also need a place to learn, laugh, share ideas, ask questions, and simply connect with people who understand what we do.
That's why I wanted to create this space. Not another group where someone just posts resources and announcements, but a real community of teachers supporting teachers, wherever we happen to be in the world.
And I haven't given this community the attention it deserves.
So I want to change that. Not by making big promises, but by showing up, sharing more of what we're doing, and most importantly, listening to you.
I'd love to start by getting to know you all a little better!
Where are you teaching from? What age groups do you teach? And how has your back-to-school experience been so far?
Please introduce yourself in the comments, even if you've been here for a while!
Thank you for being here, for believing in this crazy initiative, and for being part of this little global family of educators.
With love,
Jennifer ❤️
