Fireworks can be stressful for many dogs, but a little preparation can go a long way. Save this checklist and see how many you can check off before the celebrations begin!
✅ Fireworks Night Checklist
☐ Exercise your dog earlier in the day with a walk, training session, or enrichment activity.
☐ Feed dinner before the fireworks begin.
☐ Give your dog a potty break before it gets dark.
☐ Bring all pets indoors before fireworks start.
☐ Close windows, curtains, and blinds to reduce noise and flashes.
☐ Turn on a TV, fan, or calming music to help mask outside sounds.
☐ Set up a cozy “safe space” with their favorite bed, blankets, or crate if they enjoy it.
☐ Offer a long-lasting chew, stuffed Kong, lick mat, or puzzle toy.
☐ Keep ID tags on and make sure your microchip information is current.
☐ Keep dogs on a leash for potty breaks—even in a fenced yard.
☐ Stay calm and let your dog choose where they feel safest.
☐ Reward calm behavior with treats, praise, or gentle affection if your dog enjoys it.
☐ Avoid forcing your dog to “face their fears” by watching fireworks up close.
☐ If your dog has severe fear or panic, talk with your veterinarian before the holiday about medication or other treatment options.
Remember: Your goal isn’t to make your dog love fireworks. It’s to help them feel as safe, supported, and comfortable as possible.
