Proverbs 16:9
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.”
In business: For Christian entrepreneurs rigidly following their own plans whilst missing where the Lord is actually calling them to go, this verse reveals that whilst we make plans, God establishes our steps through His divine leading.
We carefully craft business plans, strategies, and roadmaps, believing success comes through meticulous preparation and flawless execution. But this verse establishes a vital balance: in their hearts humans plan their course, acknowledging we should plan, but the Lord establishes their steps, reminding us that God ultimately directs where we actually go.
Our role is being attentive to where the Lord is calling us, even when it differs from our carefully constructed plans.
Being attentive means we hold our plans loosely, remaining alert to divine interruptions, unexpected opportunities, and course corrections the Holy Spirit prompts.
That client who seems outside our target market, the partnership that doesn’t fit our strategy, the pivot that contradicts our plan, these might be God establishing steps different from what we envisioned. Attentiveness requires spiritual sensitivity to recognise His leading even when it surprises us.
Many entrepreneurs miss their greatest opportunities because they’re too committed to their own plans to notice where God is actually calling them. We march forward according to our strategies whilst God stands at a different door, waiting for us to notice His invitation. Success comes not from perfectly executing our plans but from attentively following where the Lord establishes our steps.
Our businesses reach their divine purpose when we remain attentive to where the Lord is calling us, willing to adjust our plans whenever His established steps lead in unexpected directions.
