Awareness: Discovering the Possibilities of AI
The first day of the International Women’s AI & Digital Empowerment Week, hosted by Clap Academy in strategic partnership with Center for Economic and Leadership Development UK, Wealth Wise Woman C.I.C and BVCOM LLC USA, opened with an incredible atmosphere of curiosity, inspiration, and global participation.
Women joined the virtual event from across the United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, North America, and Canada, demonstrating something powerful — the global hunger for knowledge about Artificial Intelligence and the future of work.
The theme for Day 1 was Awareness — Discovering the Possibilities of AI.
The goal was clear: break the fear around artificial intelligence and help women understand that AI is not a distant future — it is already shaping our world today.
Opening the Event
The event opened with a warm welcome and community-building moment where participants shared where they were joining from in the chat. Within minutes, the platform lit up with locations from London, Lagos, Malawi, Toronto, US, Canada and across Europe, highlighting the truly global nature of the event.
Participants were reminded that this initiative was designed to help women discover how AI can accelerate their careers, enhance their productivity, and open new professional opportunities.
Keynote: AI Is Not Coming — It’s Already Here
The keynote address was delivered by Olatomiwa Williams (M.CIoD), a senior leader at Microsoft who is driving AI-powered growth across emerging markets. Her message was both powerful and reassuring.
She emphasized that Artificial Intelligence is no longer optional for professionals in the modern economy.
But she also dismantled one of the biggest myths that discourages women from entering the field:
You do not need a computer science degree to benefit from AI.
She explained that AI is already embedded in everyday professional environments — from healthcare and finance to marketing, education, and business operations.
More importantly, she challenged the audience to see themselves not merely as users of AI, but as future leaders shaping how AI is developed and applied ethically and responsibly.
Her closing challenge resonated strongly with attendees:
“If not you, then who? If not now, then when?”
Practical Session: 5 AI Tools You Can Use Today
Following the keynote, Adaeze Adolphy delivered one of the most exciting sessions of the evening — a practical demonstration of AI tools that anyone can start using immediately.
She walked participants through accessible platforms including:
- ChatGPT for writing, research, and professional productivity
- Gemini for content creation and image generation
- Microsoft Copilot for workplace productivity (not covered due to time constraint)
- NotebookLM for research and learning
- Canva AI for visual design and content creation (not covered due to time constraint)
For many attendees, this session created a powerful “lightbulb moment.”
AI suddenly stopped feeling complex or intimidating and instead felt like a toolbox that could immediately improve their daily work.
The most powerful message from this session was simple:
AI is not replacing professionals — it is amplifying them.
Panel Discussion: Women Breaking into AI and Tech
The final session of the day brought together inspiring women who shared their journeys into the tech industry with an introduction by Fadé Adeniyi. The panel explored real topics that many women face when considering a transition into tech:
- Confidence gaps
- Career changes
- Lack of representation in the technology industry
- Overcoming imposter syndrome
But rather than focusing on obstacles, the conversation centred on solutions, resilience, and opportunity all of which gave a confidence boost to all the women in attendance.
The diverse backgrounds of the panelists reinforced a critical message:
There is no single path into AI and technology.
Some came from business backgrounds, others from entrepreneurship, education, or non-technical careers — yet they all successfully found their place in the tech ecosystem.
The Big Takeaway from Day 1
Day 1 achieved exactly what it was designed to do:
It shifted mindsets and built confidence.
Participants left the session with three key realizations:
1️⃣ AI is becoming a fundamental professional skill
2️⃣ You do not need to be technical to benefit from AI
3️⃣ Women have an essential role to play in shaping the future of technology
The awareness had been ignited. But the journey had only just begun.
Day 2 moved the conversation from awareness to exploration — diving deeper into the skills and career paths available in AI.
