Cricut Mats Explained for Beginners
Cricut feels intimidating? Start with something simple: your mats.
When you unbox your Cricut, you’ll see mats included.
Most machines come with:
🔹 Light Blue – Light Grip
🔹 Green – Standard Grip
But you’ll also see Purple and Pink mats on the market.
Do you actually know the difference?
Here’s the breakdown:
🔹 Blue (Light Grip)
Best for:
  • Light cardstock
  • Copy paper
  • Printer paper
  • Washi tape
If your material bends easily in your hand, start here.
🟢 Green (Standard Grip)
Best for:
  • Medium to heavy cardstock
  • Vinyl
  • HTV (iron-on)
This is your everyday mat for most common Cricut projects.
🟣 Purple (Strong Grip)
The toughest one.
Used for:
  • Basswood
  • Chipboard
  • Heavy specialty materials
Use this when your material needs serious hold.
🌸 Pink (Fabric Grip)
Designed for:
  • Fabric
  • Felt
Especially useful when cutting fabric without backing.
Why does this matter?
Using the wrong mat can:
  • Waste materials
  • Tear your project
  • Frustrate you for no reason
I once cut 65lb cardstock on a green mat. I was so excited to peel off my design… and it ripped while removing it because the mat was too sticky.
Wrong mat = preventable heartbreak.
Start simple. Master your mats.
Confidence grows from understanding the basics.
