Fear After A Spook is Normal!
Spooky moments can shake anyone’s confidence, and it’s completely normal to wonder if it’ll happen again (because, let’s be real—it might). The key is building back trust, both with your horse and yourself. Try starting in a controlled environment, using small patterns to keep your horse focused on you. Start simple and take your time building each ride. Don’t underestimate the power of stacking small, positive experiences each ride—it shifts your mindset and your horse’s confidence in you.
Here are three things to focus on during that first ride back:
✅ Your breathing – Keep it steady. Shallow breathing signals tension to your horse, while deep breaths help both of you relax.
✅ Your horse’s focus – If they start fixating on something spooky, redirect their attention with gentle movement (like a turn).
✅ Small wins – Define success in small steps. Walking on a loose rein or getting one good transition is a win! Stack those positive moments to rebuild trust.
Have these techniques helped you before?
