As part of this post, I invite you to continue to explore your self-awareness to be able to draft conclusions and start strategizing for professional growth. This time, we are invited to unveil your inner saboteurs. Saboteurs are the voices in your head that generate negative emotions in the way you handle life’s everyday challenges. They represent automated patterns in your mind for how to think, feel, and respond. They cause all of your stress, anxiety, self-doubt, frustration, restlessness, and unhappiness. They sabotage your performance, well-being, and relationships. https://www.positiveintelligence.com/assessments/ As before, I invite you to share your scores and expand a bit about them as a group. I’m sure there will be some patterns amongst all of you that could be interesting to unveil!

The best foundation for growth is to be aware of where are we starting from at a given time. A few days ago when talking with a fellow HoD friend of mine, he mention this test and I thought I would share it here as I believe it to be directly related to professional growth. This is basically an assessment that measures the proportion of your time you are thinking positive healthy thoughts vs the proportion of your time you may be thinking unhealthy, negative or unhelpful thoughts. All of that contributes to your own self-awareness which is paramount for success. https://assessment.positiveintelligence.com/pq/overview I invite you to share your scores and expand a bit about them as a group. I’m sure there will be some patterns amongst all of you that could be interesting to unveil!

My name is Jake, and I'm very excited to join this community with you all. I grew up in Michigan and have worked in Los Angeles for almost ten years as an editor and digital artist. After watching all the breakdowns included with the Blu-ray, Cloverfield was the movie that interested me in VFX after finishing college/university. As an AE user initially, I've forced myself not to use it for the past three years as I continue to learn more about node-based compositing. I can't wait to grow (and level up) alongside one another. What made you interested in VFX? Thank you!

Hello everyone, so happy to be here with all of you, like-minded peeps! I posted a methodology piece on Linkedin last Friday which unexpectedly got a fair amount of attention, and Monica suggested that I post a version of it here so that we could discuss the topic among ourselves as well, I thought it was a great idea! I elaborated a bit here with feedback from Linkedin that I found were great points missing in my original post. So without further ado, here it is! Last week at work, my lovely colleagues and I had an interesting conversation about picking up in-progress Nuke scripts that are difficult to read, and it made me feel like elaborating on the subject here with all of you. So if you let me, I will entitle this post "Nuke script ethics, or how to show your undying love and respect to your colleagues who may have to pick up your work sometimes." ;-) In my opinion, here are the most important things to ask yourself when you build a comp script, so it's easy to read and fast to process: 1- Do I have a main pipe? If I have a main pipe using mainly merge > overs, that flows from top to bottom in depth order as much as possible (far up top, closer at the bottom), my colleagues will easily understand my script in 3 seconds. If I don't have a main pipe, my script will be hard to read and will probably take a long time to decipher. This will be a waste of time for everybody. Chop chop. 2- Do I have diagonal connections that go all over the place or tons of hidden inputs? Now that's a touchy subject. Many studios literally forbid the use of hidden inputs. In my opinion, if they are not used to making a poorly structured script look clean, I say go for it as long as they are labelled clearly. Also, if used to cleanly link one camera node or one reformat node to many projections, that's also the right way to do it: it speeds up the script and doesn't impede the readability. For example, say I need the alpha of an element to stencil an alpha on another element. I usually make a dot at the source and write a note saying "hidden output to <specific location>" and make another dot at the target with a label saying "hidden input from <specific location>". Boom! Clear. And I try to limit my usage of that method as much as possible to keep my script easy to read.

I am glad to be a part of this community. I have always loved Films. My first meeting with video editing was in 2013 when I was a student. I find a part-time job on TV Chanel as a video editor. It was exciting like a serious first job, but boring to work with oldies on no one’s needed government content. After the “Revolution of dignity” (Ukraine) I lost a job because the TV center was located right in the middle of the revolution and I participated in it after work. Further were problems in my family and I had to think about hustling money and not about my dream work. Next time, in 2016-2017 I decided that I had to make money through work that I would love. I bought a camera and start a make videos as a freelance filmmaker combined with my other business. I made videos for companies, and private businesses for all except weddings. First 1.5 years I felt amazing. I collected and spend the money on education to move to a more creative sphere of Filmmaking, but after ending one of the relatively expensive schools and not getting the expected result. I have been scared that I was stuck, but still continued looking for opportunities for growth. And in 2019-2020 happened a pandemic, and in the complete absence of a job, I find motion design and 3d graphics. This became my new way to grow and passion. I didn’t know how to earn the money on it. And tried to offer to include it in the video for my old clients, which step by step was returned to business after the pandemic. Finally, at the start of 2022, I had a full load of big creative projects at least for half a year. But on 24 February at 4 am I woke up with missiles exploding, Russia attacked my country, the war started, in 10min I packed my bags, take my relatives and was moving to an unknown direction to Europe. As a miracle, I leave the country through battlegrounds and now I am in a safe place, in a little town in Germany. I decided that I want to continue growing in the 3d sphere and find a job in one of Berlin’s VFX studios for communications and fast-growing my skills, and if to be honest I have a little tired of freelance, I need a small stability after the years :) I find an online VFX school to speed up making a portfolio, but unfortunately, it’s not helped me a lot, and I have to look for a piece of information through youtube tutorials to finish my portfolio and earn my goal to relocate to Berlin. After all, I wish all guys and gals do never give up no matter how hard it is. Everyone has their own story and own path and we must walk it with our heads held high. Peace :)

Hello everyone! Imposter Syndrome is way more common than you might think across the entire spectrum of professional development and independent of the number of years of experience someone might have. There are several well-accomplished professionals that you probably look up to that also deal with it in one way or another. One of the most important steps to deal with it is to talk about it with your peers. You will see that there's a good chance that, they too are dealing with the same! We want this platform to be a safe place for everyone, so I would encourage you to share what triggers your imposter syndrome, what goes through your mind when it kicks in and what strategies you follow to deal with it.

Hi Everyone, I hope you're all well 😀 The other day I realised that a lot of people were sharing with me things that they were struggling with at their workplace and I found some common things in them. That made me think about our community and that we could share a bit more about what's happening and see if others have some input on things to help or just to share the feeling that we're not alone. so... What is the latest challenge you are experiencing or experienced at work? And how did you overcome that challenge if you did already! Happy sharing Monica
