Question about free member in a paid group

Hello, we're currently transitioning our community to a school setting. We aim to grant free access to all active members (who were previously paying) initially and then convert the group to a paid subscription. Will the system automatically recognize this transition, ensuring that these individuals won't be billed once we've made the switch?
