Hi guys, just jotting down my thoughts here about the whole GTM engineering wave that's been going around on LinkedIn, and how every other lead-gen expert is now a GTM engineer.
I mean, I love the advice of picking the biggest waves to surf, but I feel there's a slight disconnect between things. Firstly, when I read about what exactly GTM engineering is, it's so much more than just outbound. It includes RevOps, quite a lot of technical know-how, being involved in managing a complex CRM and not just a simple GoHighLevel interface. You need to be a sales champ to really understand what to say and whom to say it to, multi-threading, etc. Basically, way more things than just outbound.
And don't get me wrong, outbound is the core piece of this whole GTM engineering thing. And hence, this is a great progression from just outbound lead gen to really becoming a full-funnel weapon for your clients.
I also spoke to a few people in this space about how to gradually learn and become a GTM Engineer with actual chops in understanding full-funnel marketing and not just being good at running Clay workflows and email campaigns to generate leads.
From what I understood, most people I’d look up to for advice suggest joining a fast-growing startup or a bigger agency in this pond and experimenting a ton while you're there. Be involved in everything across the entire customer journey, try implementing new stuff that you learn, and optimize for automation and efficiency.
I also feel that the term "GTM Engineer," and to some extent most of its core responsibilities, are only really relevant to the SaaS space. Every company branding themselves as AI and GTM is mostly serving SaaS clients.
I feel there's a blue ocean for people to take solid GTM principles and strategies and build lead generation solutions end-to-end for other industries. Two people I see doing this best are:
Aaron, who's building Serpire for SEO agencies, and Automindz Solution, who are building it for the recruitment industry.
While everyone is going after cool SaaS brands that raised millions in funding and may also have amazing teams and PMF concepts, you can create a space for yourself by becoming the next Gymlaunch, or Serpire, or Automindz for your industry expertise.
Where do you see the biggest opportunity for GTM Engineers?
