Your AI Agents Can Now Make Purchases Natively
Commerce is about to change more in the next 18 months than it has in the last 18 years, and almost nobody in our space is positioned for it.
Nous Research and Stripe. Two logos like that do not end up in the same graphic by accident.
Here is why it matters to you.
Stripe runs the payment rails for a massive chunk of the internet. Their entire current thesis is that AI agents are becoming autonomous economic actors, and that agents will soon be responsible for most online transactions. Their own framing: agents work faster than we do, so they are going to spend money a lot faster too.
Now connect the dots. Hermes is the agent we build everything on. Hermes agents already research, decide, and act. Add payment rails and the loop closes. The agent becomes the buyer.
Here is what that does to marketing.
For 20 years, marketing has basically been emotional manipulation with better fonts. Scarcity. Countdown timers. FOMO. The founder origin story. Social proof walls. Fake urgency. Pretty packaging. All of it engineered to push a human's emotional buttons hard enough to get a card out of a wallet.
That entire playbook assumes a human is the buyer.
When your customer's agent is the one buying, none of it lands. An agent does not feel FOMO. It does not tear up at your origin story. It does not panic at a countdown timer. It reads structured data, compares real options on real criteria, checks the evidence, and transacts.
So the game flips. The question stops being "how do I make a human FEEL something" and becomes "how do I make my offer legible and choosable to a machine."
Marketing for agents looks like this:
- Clean, structured, machine-readable data about what you actually sell
- Real specs and real pricing, not vague "contact us to learn more" walls
- Verifiable claims: actual reviews, actual evidence, actual numbers
- Endpoints an agent can read and act on directly
- Zero manipulation, because manipulation does not compute
If you read my last post on QC, this is the same lesson from the other direction. We force a real reviewer name and real review evidence into every cold email, not just to dodge spam filters, but because verifiable substance is exactly what an agent buyer trusts. Vibes are for humans. Evidence is for agents. Build for evidence.
Start auditing your offers now. Ask the brutal question: if a Hermes agent had to choose between me and my competitor on data alone, with zero emotional pull, would it pick me? If the honest answer is no, that is your roadmap for the next year.
THE HERMES UPDATE
While we are on Hermes, the team shipped a big one. v0.16.0, the Surface Release, landed in early June.
What you get:
- A native desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux with one-click install and in-app self-update
- Concurrent profiles, so you can run isolated agents (a coder and a researcher, for example) that never share state
- A fuller web admin dashboard, plus the new Profile Builder that lets you stand up a new agent's identity, model, skills, and MCP servers from a browser form instead of typing CLI commands
- Quick Setup straight through Nous Portal
- And under the hood, the codebase now ships ACP rails, the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which is the exact plumbing that makes the Stripe story above real and not just hype
HOW TO UPDATE
You have three ways, depending on how you run things.
1. From the terminal on your VPS (where your agent actually lives):
hermes update
Then confirm it came back healthy:
hermes doctor
2. Via Claude Code or Codex, chat style:
If you have Claude Code or Codex installed on the VPS, you do not even need to remember the command. Open it and tell it in plain English:
"Update Hermes to the latest version, then run hermes doctor and confirm it came back healthy."
It runs the commands for you and reports back. This is the whole chat versus terminal point I keep hammering. Same result, two roads. You either type the command yourself, or you tell your coding agent to do it and verify. If you are newer, lean on the chat method until the commands feel like second nature. The faster you get comfortable working on the VPS this way, the faster everything else gets.
3. Desktop app:
If you are on the new desktop app, it self-updates. One click and you are current.
One rule for all three: always run hermes doctor after an update, and if you have customized your config, skim the release notes before you update a production agent so nothing catches you off guard.
The agents are about to become the buyers. Build like it.
