Here's you'll focus on keeping Cantonese alive by learning Traditional Standard Written Characters (SWC) in Cantonese pronunciation.
SWC are different from the "conversational" Cantonese characters you might be learning in your conversation class.
For example: She is a girl.
Cantonese "conversational" characters: 佢係個女仔。
Standard Written (Traditional) Characters (SWC) in Cantonese pronunciation: 她是個女孩。
Only two of those characters are the same, and native speakers will read and use both -- in different contexts. SWC are used in official documents, subtitles, song lyrics, books, signs ... anything that isn't in conversation.
SWC are important to learn for the obvious reasons of wanting to read and sing, and also to keep Cantonese alive. It's helpful to know that the Cantonese pre-dates Mandarin and many of the old poems and such don't rhyme and make sense with non-Cantonese SWC pronunciation.
