Canicross & you.
A brief introduction and history of Canicross.
Canicross.
Known more colloquially as ‘cross country trail running with dogs’ is an activity almost as old as sledding/mushing itself.
While traditionally speaking, in the early days of Canicross, most commonly found breeds were the sledding and working breeds as the activity is derived from mushing sports.
While recreation has been shown to be a highly valued component of a happy life, Canicross began to grow away from its reliance on the community of dogsledding and matured into an activity all its own. These days there are almost no breeds that do not participate.
The development and maturation of canicross found a first foothold throughout Europe with the United Kingdom generally credited as taking the initiative in bringing Canicross to a level of legitimacy.
In regards to governing bodies & institutions for the sport, the answer to that question can be found by doing some simple research to determine who, if anyone is the governing body of a specific geographic region.
There are an abundance of coaches throughout North America ready, able and excited to assist you and your canine companion on your first steps in this highly satisfying activity.
Competitive & recreational
While both schools of thought and activity are available out there, it is important to remember that activity and bonding are our priorities. For our recreational participants, combination walk and run style adventures are absolutely 100% acceptable and greatly encouraged.
While many people will have different answers to particular questions, what MuckyPupsNL likes to focus on is the teamwork and bond between human and dog. As the human component of the equation, no solution is available without your partner. The dog does not pull the runner along or up a hill. No. The team (generally one human and one-two dogs) works together as a smooth process to accomplish the goal.
There is an inherent beauty in the deconstruction of the distance selected. As a spectator knowing what to look for, it’s truly a thing of beauty to watch the dog(s) and human working as a singular entity to reach their destination. Traversing the wilderness of the island in the most perfect company you can.
MuckyPupsNL, located in the Clarenville area of the Avalon peninsula of Newfoundland provides both training (for dog and human) and equipment from Nonstop Dogwear in support of sledding and mushing sports including Canicross, bikejoring, skijoring and dogsledding.
Canicross generally falls under organizations under the umbrella of Sled dog and Mushing Sports such as the International Sled Dog Federation which seen its inception in 1985 and the United States Federation of Sled Dog sports born in 1988. Today one of the most useful and supportive organizations is the North American Canicross (which holds no affiliation with the previous two listed organizations).
Significant Canicross events:
  • 1st Canicross race held in UK was in 2000.
  • CaniX Uk; March 2008; first ever Canicross event at Crufts (largest dog show in the world) which saw over 100 runners and their dogs register!
  • 2012 CaniX hosted the first ECF European Canicross championships in the UK.
