Savoir vs Connaître — Two Ways to Know
Salut! Today you're learning one of the most common points of confusion in French — there are two completely different verbs for "to know" and they are not interchangeable!

Savoir — To know a fact or skill
Je sais — I know
Tu sais — You know
Il / Elle / On sait — He / She / We knows
Nous savons — We know
Vous savez — You know (formal / plural)
Ils / Elles savent — They know
Connaître — To know a person or place
Je connais — I know
Tu connais — You know
Il / Elle / On connaît — He / She / We knows
Nous connaissons — We know
Vous connaissez — You know (formal / plural)
Ils / Elles connaissent — They know
The key difference:
use savoir for facts and skills — je sais nager, je sais que tu es là.
Use connaître for people and places — je connais Marie, je connais bien Paris.
When in doubt, ask yourself if you could replace "know" with "be familiar with" — if yes, it's connaître!
