The Suwannee Means "River of Reeds" [SUWANNEE]
Long before Stephen Foster, the early Native inhabitants called the Suwannee "Guasaca Esqui" — meaning "River of Reeds." The current name is thought to be a corruption of "San Juanee," or "Little St. John." Three names. Three peoples. Same dark water.
