John 1:5
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Gospel of John 1:5
This verse appears in the opening of the Gospel of John, often called the Prologue (John 1:1–18). The passage introduces Jesus not just as a teacher or prophet, but as the eternal Word (Logos) present with God from the beginning and active in creation.
John is presenting a cosmic picture:
- Light vs. darkness
- Life vs. death
- Truth vs. ignorance
- Good vs. evil
