In the early 1930’s, Burr was running experiments related to his theory of “essential fatty acid deficiency” in rats.
He noticed that PUFA-deficient rats on a specific high sugar diet consumed oxygen at an uncharacteristically high rate.
For 6 months Brown consumed a 2500 calorie per day diet completely void of unsaturated fats (PUFA), and high in sugars in the forms of glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, and potato starch along with micronutrient supplementation from mineral oil, baking soda, and salt, as well as Vitamin D3, Vitamin A, and iron.
Firstly, Brown had suffered since childhood from migraines. Within 6 weeks on this high sugar diet, they completely subsided and never returned. Secondly, he started the diet with slightly high blood pressure. A few months into the experimental diet, his blood pressure completely normalised.
He also lost a significant amount of weight through the 6 month period, corresponding to a measurable increase in his metabolic rate indicators.
He went from 152lbs at the start of the dieting period with a metabolic rate at -12% below normal, and within a few months raised his metabolic rate to just -2% below normal while dropping to 138lbs, which he easily maintained through the end of the study period.
At 2500 calories per day, mostly from sugar, this is a feat most people would not believe possible, especially at his body weight and without extra activity.
Brown also reported a noticeable increase in energy throughout his work days. Where he used to feel a sense of fatigue at the end of the day, he reported that this fatigue completely disappeared while on the diet.
And similar to the rats, his respiratory quotient significantly increased, which also indicates an increase in metabolic rate and thyroid function. His respiratory quotient was above a 1.0, hitting as high as 1.14 during the sixth month of the experiment.
A respiratory quotient of 1.0 and above indicates an exceptional ability of the body to oxidise pure carbohydrate for fuel. Compare this against the respiratory quotient of a Type 2 diabetic, which can fall down into the 0.7 range, indicative of a preference in the diabetic physiology of oxidising fatty acids instead of carbohydrates.
And weirdly, despite their reporting that the diet didn’t significantly change Brown’s cholesterol measurements, it actually dropped his total serum cholesterol quite a bit, going from 298 to 206 mg/dL over the first four months.
It has been shown that giving thyroid to a patient with high cholesterol. The cholesterol drops back to normal after a few weeks. This is due to the cholesterol that is then used to make steroids. So high cholesterol is the best sign to show that your thyroid hormones are slow.
The cholesterol improvement proves that thyroid hormones (metabolic rate) improved. As thyroid hormones are responsible for the use of cholesterol to create steroid hormones.
Why does everyone still believe sugar is bad for the body, especially when sugar consumption is actually decreasing while the rates of obesity and Type 2 diabetes continue to rise?
The idea that eating sugar causes obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer is a pre scientific belief, perpetuated through the last few centuries to the detriment of hundreds of millions of people. The development of this “sugar disease” theory rode alongside, and relied heavily upon, the veracity of the lipid theory of heart disease, which indicts cholesterol and saturated fat consumption as causal factors in cardiovascular disease, and, despite the fact that these theories have both been thoroughly disproven, these inaccurate ideas remain firmly seated on the dogmatic throne at the centre of the temple of the cultural hive mind, held as immutable truth.
Ray Peat on migraines
The whole endotoxin issue surrounding poor gut motility is responsible for inflammation, and that inflammation is picked up in the intestine, and that actually causes a reflex action for migraine, triggering migraines in terms of vasoconstriction.
When your blood sugar is low - your intestine is very touchy - and has exaggerated reflexes - and bulging it / stretching it with gas or constipation causes migraines.
I had been a migrainer for all my life, and I gradually came to see that a change in my rhythm of eating in relation to activity was usually what brought on a migraine attack. And often I would have very odd food cravings just before the migraine appeared, and even shortly after eating I would get food cravings.
Since I was using that active thyroid hormone (T3) it was very quick and very noticeable that if I drank fluoridated water for example in my coffee or orange juice I would get a migraine.
A glass of fluoridated water is enough to knock out a day's portion of the active thyroid hormone.
I had a complete reversal of the symptoms from one to two minutes from a total migraine to total wellness after ingesting about 100 milligrams of progesterone (more for women).
In my own migraine experience, I found that a very small amount of either vitamin A or magnesium chloride could cause big headaches for two or three days. If I had put vitamin A anywhere on my face or arms, enough would touch my lips to cause the headache. It wasn't the vitamin A or magnesium itself that did it, but some very powerful allergen in the chemically manufactured products.
Progesterone, sugar (stops histamine and serotonin) and things that stimulate your intestine such as raw carrots and cooked mushrooms are great remedies for migraine.
Lots of sugar, without coffee, would be quicker for restoring blood sugar. At least a quart of milk shake or ice cream can provide the needed sugar in a form that can be assimilated quickly. 100 mg of progesterone in oil can usually stop it, by stopping the wastage of glucose.
To conclude:
Migraines happen due to low blood sugar, which leads to vasoconstriction. Migraines can be induced by serotonin, endotoxin, histamine and high estrogen. Low thyroid hormones lead to issues with blood sugar, hence fluoridated water - which displaced iodine and lowers thyroid - causes migraines.
Maintain blood sugar levels by consuming enough honey, sugar, juice, fruit etc. Avoid starches, like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes which can increase endotoxin, serotonin and gut issues. The utilization of progesterone and thyroid hormone is a powerful remedy as well.
Also bag breathing, which increases CO2 - which is also induced by sugar, thyroid and progesterone - can be a quick remedy to stop a migraine headache.
