Part 1: Skin Chemistry Completely Changes a Fragrance. THE MYTH: "Every fragrance smells completely different on everybody because of skin chemistry." THE REALITY: Skin chemistry matters, but it generally doesn't completely rewrite a fragrance's composition. We've all heard someone say, "That smells totally different on my skin than it does on yours." There's some truth to that, but we need to understand what's actually happening. A fragrance is built around a formula. Its aromatic materials don't suddenly become entirely different ingredients because two people have different skin chemistry. What can change is how those materials behave. Skin temperature, moisture, natural oils, and individual skin characteristics can influence evaporation, diffusion, and how certain notes are perceived. One person's skin may emphasize sweetness, while another's may bring out woods, spices, or musks. Here's something else to consider. Our noses aren't identical either. We have different sensitivities to individual aroma chemicals. Sometimes what we attribute to skin chemistry is actually a difference in how we perceive certain materials. This is also why I encourage testing fragrances on skin, but I use cotton rounds as well. A cotton round gives me a relatively neutral surface to follow the fragrance's development without the same influence of skin. It helps me understand the basic structure of the fragrance, including its opening, heart, and drydown. More importantly, a cotton round can help you determine whether you even like a particular scent profile in the first place. If you're testing a fragrance with a heavy leather, oud, iris, amber, or gourmand profile, you can get a good idea of whether that style appeals to you before committing valuable skin space to it. It's especially useful when you're testing multiple fragrances. You can set the cotton rounds aside, revisit them over several hours, and experience how the scent develops. But there's an important distinction: A cotton round can tell you whether you like the scent profile. Your skin tells you how that fragrance actually wears on you.
