U.S Importers Are Getting Back $166B Back in Tariff Refunds. Here's How to Apply for Yours
Following a recent Supreme Court ruling, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is set to return approximately $166 billion in duties to over 300,000 importers. If your business paid IEEPA-related tariffs, you may be eligible for a refund.
How the Refund Process Works
CBP has launched the CAPE system, a streamlined four-step online portal:
- Claim: Upload your refund request using a standardized spreadsheet.
- Processing: CBP removes the specific tariff codes and recalculates what you owe.
- Review: Entry summaries are updated and interest is calculated in your favor.
- Refund: Funds are deposited electronically into your account.
4 Steps to Prepare Your Business Now
If you imported good subject to these tariffs, these steps will help you avoid delays:
- Update Your Importer Record (Form 5106): Ensure your own email address is listed, not your customs broker’s.
- Create an ACE Portal Account: If you don’t have one, start now—setup can take 3–4 weeks.
- Enroll in ACH Refund: This is required for electronic deposits. Without it, your refund will be delayed.
- Consult Your Broker: Ask them to identify any "exception" entries (such as liquidated entries, open protests, or AD/CVD entries) that might require extra handling.https://www.uschamber.com/economy/tariff-refunds-faq-what-small-businesses-need-to-know-after-supreme-courts-ruling
