Advice from someone who learned to sew as an adult... And now teaches other adults how to sew
FIRST, the most important question is always "What do I WANT to sew?". What is your goal with sewing? There are SO MANY different 'ways' of sewing... Just like some people like to bake and decorate cakes, others enjoy the sourdough adventure and some like cooking dinners.
Some of the 'sewing directions' I've heard woman talk about:
✅ I want a hobby that helps me be creative and relax a little
✅ I want to make cute, useful things with pretty fabric
✅ I want to sew for my family - kids clothes are so pricey and ... blah
✅ I want to make my own clothes!
✅ Quilting! I want to learn to quilt!
✅ I'd like to alter my clothes or upcycle them
...And there are more! Some want to do a little bit of everything (Hi, it's me. And most of the women in The Creative Sewing Club 😂💗) The point is : knowing WHAT you want to sew is where you start. Or you're going to end up following all the advice that has nothing to do with your goals.
*You don't learn to fry an amazing steak by baking cupcakes*
So what SHOULD you sew first then?
Most people will tell you to sew things like:
👉 Tote Bags (also so much fun! I love giving handmade gifts in a handmade bag!)
And ONLY THEN move on to clothes. But if that's not your interest - you can definitely sew clothes first!
My favourites:
👉 Elastic Waist Skirt with gathers
👉 Pants with pockets
👉 Shift dress / top
These are all JUST AS EASY as a pillowcase or tote bag - but you get to wear them afterwards!
When I first started sewing, I didn’t make any of the usual beginner projects. No pillowcases or tote bags. I jumped straight into sewing a baby onesie because that’s what I wanted to make.
And honestly? That’s what kept me going.
Now, when someone tells me they want to sew clothes, I don’t try to talk them into something “easier.” I help them choose a project that’s both doable and exciting.
Because being interested in what you're making matters just as much as the instructions.
What will you be sewing this weekend?
