🧠 “What’s Missing in Basildon?” Building a Trauma-Informed, Multi-Agency Approach to Hoarding Support
After another intense hoarding and risk-reduction training with professionals from across the UK — hosted by the brilliant Clouds End CIC — one thing became clear: Basildon has the passion, but we’re still missing the joined-up structure.
Working alongside Heather Macey, Director of Clouds End, and learning from leading figures like Sharon McLoughlin, has reaffirmed my commitment to building a local network that mirrors the best practice being delivered nationally. I’ll be continuing further training with Clouds End in the coming months, so we can bring that knowledge, structure, and trauma-informed expertise right here to Basildon.
đź’¬ Every Person Is Different
As Sharon reminded us, “Every person is different.” That truth sits at the heart of trauma-informed practice. Hoarding isn’t a cleaning issue — it’s a deeply personal, often trauma-linked mental health condition. Each home, each story, and each recovery journey is unique.
Our role as professionals — whether we’re in housing, cleaning, mental health, fire safety, or community support — is to meet people where they are, not where we want them to be.
🏠 What’s Missing in Basildon
While there are incredible professionals doing vital work across our town, we’re all still working in different corners of the same issue.
Here’s what’s still missing:
  • Consistent collaboration between services
  • Clear referral pathways so no resident slips through the cracks
  • Aftercare and relapse prevention, not just one-off interventions
  • Peer-to-peer programmes led by people with lived experience
  • Joint training and shared language across sectors
  • Trauma-informed awareness at every level of intervention
Without these, we risk short-term fixes instead of long-term change.
🌍 Learning from Clouds End CIC
Clouds End’s national model is proof that true progress comes from partnership. Their multi-agency approach connects housing, health, fire, and community sectors under one trauma-informed framework.
They provide:
  • Specialist practitioner training and case management support
  • Peer-to-peer groups led by lived-experience mentors
  • Multi-agency panels that focus on risk, wellbeing, and recovery
  • Ongoing aftercare to prevent relapse and isolation
This is the gold standard of collaborative hoarding support — and it’s exactly what I’m working to bring to Basildon through the Basildon Hoarding Support Network (BHSN).
đź”— A Call for Collaboration
I’m now calling on Essex Wellbeing Services, local charity organisations, Basildon Social Prescribers, Essex Fire & Rescue, Essex Police, and local housing support providers to come together.
If you work within the housing sector — or beyond — and believe you could make even the slightest impact on this misunderstood mental health condition, we want to hear from you.
Together, with the guidance and best practice shared by Clouds End, we can create a local model that puts people, not possessions, at the centre of support.
đź’ž Moving Forward
The next steps are about action:
  • Setting up Basildon’s first multi-agency hoarding support group
  • Sharing training opportunities through Clouds End CIC
  • Developing consistent referral routes and joint case discussions
  • Building a peer-support network with lived-experience voices
Basildon has the heart, the professionals, and now — the opportunity to lead. Let’s make it happen.
