My son was non-verbal until age 3 then he began speaking constantly. What I didn’t know is that there is a difference between speech and language. He was diagnosed with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder at age 4.5.
My daughter was always the “easy” child. Obedient, a good listener, articulate, extremely intelligent, empathetic, emotionally mature. She was always in gifted classes and took “Advanced Placement” or AP classes for college credit while she was still in high school.
Both of my children have Autism, but my daughter was not diagnosed until she was 19 years old. And we had to go to a second specialist because the first one said that, although her comprehension and memory were 9 times above the standard deviation and her anxiety and OCD were “pretty bad,” she didn’t think that warranted an Autism diagnosis. Sadly, that is not uncommon in girls. The second specialist asked her about her childhood and that unlocked a lot of answers to help with her diagnosis.
