Future-Proof Friday! Adaptability
Hello! I hope you've had a wonderful week! Nearly the weekend ๐Ÿฅณ
So I thought I would share a few core future skills that will help you in the years ahead. You may already possess these, but as I say, there is always room for improvement.
Key skills to help you thrive in the future:
  • Critical Thinking
  • Creative Thinking
  • Strategic Thinking
  • Adaptability
  • Resilience
  • Problem Solving
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • AI Literacy
Just to name a few.
Today I thought I would talk about adaptability. This may not be a skill you were born with, but one you developed over time as you battled through whatever life threw at you. I put adaptability and resilience in a similar bucket, as they are the ability to change and bounce back.
If you had to take a few minutes to trace back the moments in your life that made you adaptable, what would they be? They may have been very hard times, but I'm guessing that as you overcame them, you grew stronger?
A few times I can think about ...
  • Living in 4 countries by the age of 15
  • Failing the International Baccalaureate
  • Failing a project in my Bachelors degree (and having to redo an entire year)
  • Failing a project in my Masters degree (and having to redo an entire year)
  • Rupturing my ACL a week after I moved to London and ending up in a wheelchair
  • Getting fired from my job as a Chief Marketing Officer and having to go on Universal Credit
  • Compromising my living situation for several years to avoid going further into debt
  • And many more examples with varying degrees of pain and suffering
But each of these things, while unpleasant at the time, made me stronger and prepared me for the next thing life had in store for me. As someone who is very ambitious, I always knew that ambition might come with untold difficulties. Because the more you try to do, the more likely you are to fail.
If someone has never tried to do something hard or pushed themselves out of their comfort zone, they may have never failed, which may seem like a good thing, but I think failure should be celebrated because it means at least you tried!
So here's to failure and here's to being adaptable! If you have any failures you would like to celebrate in the comments or a story of adaptability, please do :)
Have a lovely weekend you beautiful human!
