Google I/O 2026 kicks off on May 19, and AI is once again expected to take center stage. The two-day event will be livestreamed and will cover updates across Gemini, Android, Chrome, and more. Based on everything I've seen so far, here are the big storylines to watch:
✅ Gemini gets a major upgrade.
A newer, more capable Gemini model is widely expected to be the centerpiece announcement. Whether it arrives as Gemini 4.0 or something in between, it would set the tone for Google's entire product roadmap going forward. There's also a chance we see updates to other AI tools like Lyria, Gemma, and Genie, plus a possible Veo 4 reveal for AI video generation.
✅ Agentic AI is a big theme.
Expect a heavy push toward agentic AI: systems that can handle tasks on your behalf with minimal input.
✅ Android XR glasses move closer to reality.
After debuting as a concept at last year's I/O, Google's Android XR smart glasses are expected to take a step closer to an actual product this year, with multiple hardware partners involved, which could mean a range of price points.
✅ A new OS for laptops.
Google introduced the "Googlebook" this week and is expected to give significant airtime to its long-in-development project to merge Android and Chrome OS into a single platform, dubbed Aluminum OS. Google's Android Ecosystem President confirmed it's still on track for a 2026 debut.
