How To Get an API key and use it for the colouring book
How to Get Your Gemini API Key (Simple 1-Page Guide)
Follow these steps to create your free Gemini API key.
This key allows the colouring book tool (and other AI tools) to connect to Google’s Gemini AI.
STEP 1 — Go to Google AI Studio
Open this link:
Log in using your normal Google account
(Gmail, YouTube, Android login — they all work).
STEP 2 — Click “API Keys”
On the left-hand menu you’ll see:
Overview
Models
API Keys
Settings
Click API Keys.
STEP 3 — Create a New Key
Click the button:
👉 Create API Key
Google may ask you to “Choose a project.”
Just select Default Project — this is totally fine.
Click Create.
STEP 4 — Copy Your Key
You’ll now see a long key like this:
AIzaSyBxxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx
This is your Gemini API key.
Think of it like a password for AI tools:
Don’t share it
Don’t post it online
Keep it safe
STEP 5 — Use It in the Colouring Book Tool
Go to Lee’s colouring book tool
Paste your API key into the box that says:
“Paste your Gemini API key here”
Choose a theme
Enter a child’s name
Click Generate
Your key stays on your device only.
Lee does not receive it, save it, or see it.
If It Doesn’t Work
You likely:
Missed a character when copying the key
Pasted an old key
Have no credit/quota left
You can always delete the key and generate a new one in Google AI Studio.
You’re Done!
That’s all you need — your first real Gemini API key.
