A few weeks ago I asked some fairly basic questions here about moving my website to Claude Code, GitHub, Astro and Cloudflare. Several of you answered properly rather than briefly, and I said I would report back. The site is live now, so here is what happened. I want to name people, because the answers were specific enough that I would have got this wrong without them. @Catherine Eadie — the DNS approach, and I owe you a result You told me not to move my nameservers at all. Add one record, point www at the pages.dev address, leave everything else alone. You also said to copy every DNS record into a text file before touching anything. I did exactly that. Email never broke. Nothing else broke. My mail runs on Microsoft 365 and those records were the thing I was most afraid of, so this was the single most useful answer I received. You also asked me to tell you how the ALIAS went, since 123Reg does not give you one and you have been living with a bare-domain forward that only really handles the homepage. So, the result: My registrar's ALIAS did not survive. During setup I deleted a URL forward that looked dormant, and it took the ALIAS and a wildcard CNAME down with it. The site went down for about half an hour. I ended up on a URL forward for the apex, which is what you have — set to 301 with path forwarding, so deep links do arrive at the right page rather than the homepage. Not the DNS-level answer I was hoping to hand you, but at least the deep-link problem is solvable at the forward. The other thing you warned me about was the .html extension being dropped, and how it caught your search engine verification file. You were right and it saved me. I checked mine specifically because of your message. @Nesil Ozer — why Cloudflare Pages and not GitHub Pages Three reasons, and I have now hit two of them in practice. GitHub Pages does not build Astro without extra setup, whereas Cloudflare builds on connection to the repository and deploys on every push. And GitHub Pages cannot do 301 redirects, which I have needed. The traffic limit was not a factor at my size, as you said.
