Want to check if an image was generated with Google Gemini?
Basically each image you create with gemini google embed what they call a 'SynthID', which feels very Blade Runner! Just upload your image if you want to check it and type something like 'Was this image/video created or edited by Google AI' and it will do its thing and tell you within seconds.
Heres the low down:
What SynthID does
• Invisible watermarking: When supported Google models (e.g., Imagen/Veo/Gemini image tools) generate media, they embed an imperceptible pixel‑level watermark at creation time. It’s designed not to affect visual quality.
• Robust to common edits: The signal is spread through the pixels so it usually survives cropping, resizing, compression, colour tweaks, simple filters and even many screenshots.
• Detection tools: Google provides detection inside Gemini (e.g., “verify if this was created by Google AI”) and via a SynthID Detector portal; if the watermark is found, it reports that all or part of the image/video was created or edited by Google AI.
What SynthID does not do
• Not a general AI detector: It can only confirm its own watermark; if there’s no SynthID signal, that does not mean the content is human or non‑AI, just that it’s not (or no longer) watermarked by supported Google tools.
• Not unbreakable: Heavy editing, adversarial transformations, or deliberate removal attempts can weaken or destroy the watermark, so detection is probabilistic (“watermarked / not / uncertain”) rather than absolute proof.
How to use it in practice
• Treat SynthID as one provenance signal: if present, you have solid evidence the asset is Google‑AI‑origin; if absent, you need other signals (C2PA/Content Credentials, internal logs, context).
• For policy/compliance in your community, position it as:
• Good for verifying Google‑generated content and labelling it.
• Not a substitute for broader AI‑detection or human review, especially for non‑Google models
