Everything that dropped this week in AI (April 2026 recap)
okay this was probably the biggest week in generative AI this year. let me break down everything that matters for us as creators πŸ‘‡
β€”
πŸ–Ό CHATGPT IMAGES 2.0 JUST DROPPED (3 days ago)
OpenAI released GPT Image 2 and it's a massive jump. The biggest upgrade: text rendering inside images is now near-perfect. Menus, signs, UI screenshots, product labels β€” it actually spells everything correctly now.
Why this matters for us: you can now generate thumbnails, social media graphics, product mockups, and promo images with real readable text in them. No more garbled AI text. It also has "thinking capabilities" β€” it can search the web, create multiple images from one prompt, and double-check its own output before showing you.
Available to all ChatGPT users (free and paid). Paid users get more advanced outputs. API version is called gpt-image-2.
β€”
🎬 KLING 3.0 β€” NATIVE 4K VIDEO FOR $0.50/CLIP
Kling upgraded to version 3.0 with native 4K output. Not upscaled β€” actually generated in 4K. At roughly $0.50 per clip and plans starting at $6.99/month, it's the cheapest high-quality AI video option right now.
Also added: multi-prompt generation (different instructions for different parts of the same clip), dual audio inputs for layering dialogue and ambient sound separately, and improved motion quality for human subjects.
If budget matters and you're doing high volume content, Kling 3.0 is worth testing alongside Seedance.
β€”
🍌 NANO BANANA 2 β€” NOW EVEN FASTER
Google launched Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) β€” combines the quality of Nano Banana Pro with the speed of Gemini Flash. Translation: same quality we love, but way faster generation and editing. And it's free in Google Flow with zero credits.
New features:
β†’ precision text rendering (like ChatGPT Images 2.0, text in images actually works now)
β†’ real-time web search integration (can pull reference info while generating)
β†’ subject consistency across multiple images
β†’ now available in 141 new countries
Also: Google added Nano Banana-powered personalized image generation to Gemini. If you connect your Google Photos, Gemini can generate images using context from your own photos and preferences without you having to describe everything. Pretty wild.
β€”
🐴 ALIBABA'S HAPPYHORSE 1.0 β€” NEW #1 ON THE LEADERBOARD
Alibaba dropped HappyHorse 1.0 and it immediately took the #1 spot on the AI video leaderboard, beating Seedance 2.0 by the largest margin in leaderboard history. It processes text, image, video, and audio all in ONE pass β€” most other models do these separately.
The lip-sync accuracy is reportedly the best in the industry right now. Not publicly available via API yet but this is the one to watch.
β€”
🟒 SEEDANCE 2.0 β€” NOW IN THE US VIA CAPCUT
Seedance 2.0 rolled out in the US through CapCut with some restrictions: no real-face image-to-video, no unauthorized IP, and invisible watermarks on all output. For those of us outside the US, nothing changes β€” Sjinn AI and Dreamina still work the same way.
Still my #1 pick for cinematic AI video. The multi-reference capability (up to 12 inputs in one prompt) is unmatched.
β€”
🟣 VEO 3.1 β€” FREE TIER NOW AVAILABLE
Google quietly added a free tier through Google Vids: 10 clips/month, 8 seconds each, 720p. Not amazing specs but it's free Google quality. Also launched Veo 3.1 Lite at $0.05/sec for 720p β€” cheapest entry point for Google-level video generation.
β€”
πŸ“Š THE BIG PICTURE NUMBER
Stanford's 2026 AI Index report says generative AI has hit 53% global adoption in just 3 years β€” faster than the PC or the internet at the same stage. 70% of companies are deploying it in at least one function. OpenAI crossed $25B in annualized revenue. The market isn't "emerging" anymore β€” it's here.
β€”
my takeaway: the tools are getting better FAST. every month the barrier to entry drops. the people who win aren't the ones waiting for the "perfect" tool β€” they're the ones learning the prompting systems right now while everyone else is still comparing feature charts.
my current stack hasn't changed:
β†’ Seedance 2.0 for cinematic video
β†’ Nano Banana 2 for start frames (now even faster)
β†’ ChatGPT Images 2.0 for text-heavy graphics and thumbnails (new addition)
β†’ CapCut for editing
watching closely: HappyHorse 1.0 and Kling 3.0. will test both this week.
questions? what tools are you experimenting with? drop it below πŸ‘‡
