Here's a reminder for anyone who missed it. Meta has created a promising Image to 3D model called SAM 3D, which I tested to create this ring.
You can't see in the image, but it was a full rotating CAD taken from the flat image on the left, and it did a pretty incredible job rendering it. This is fully exportable as an STL with an easy "download" drop down menu.
*Some of the "spots" were different, but with more improvement, I could see SAM 3D becoming a model that "gets you 90% of the way there," much like tools like ChatGPT do. The human expert will have a moat that puts an obstacle in front of non-experts, while making the true professional's life easier.
In this case, that's the CAD Specialist - and if you recall, I've been saying for a while that this will be the "power position" of the new industry.
A Custom Jeweler that can sell to Customers and be the human barrier to the entire supply chain and design process, while being able to control CAD and send it to 3D Printing.
That's the position on "the field of play" (the Market) that you want to prepare yourself for.
Lots of Jewelers are afraid of what this will open up. Don't be. Customers don't want to learn the ins and outs of Manufacturing, and overseas Manufacturers do not know how to sell & support the Customer in your local Market like you can and do everyday.
This will merely cut costs and allow you to go faster, allowing you to put more time into creative aspects of the business.
Keep an eye out for SAM 3D, and be ready to lean in the moment this becomes reliable. For some CAD professionals - it could already be a difference maker on some projects.
