The Framework: A Taoist system for self-diagnosis and healing, viewing health as a dynamic balance of five elements: Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal.
The Analogy: Health is like a pot of boiling rice, where each element is a component (pot, rice, fire, wood, water) that must be balanced for a healthy outcome.
The Cycles: The elements interact via two main cycles:Generating (Sheng): A creative flow (e.g., Wood → Fire).
Controlling (Ko): A regulatory flow (e.g., Water controls Fire).
The Pathology: Imbalance manifests as excess or deficiency, which can be diagnosed by observing physical and emotional symptoms.
Example: Excess anger (Wood) feeds Fire, causing nervous system dysregulation. The solution is to strengthen the Metal element (breathwork) to "chop the wood" and reduce the Fire.
The Tool: Emotional Transmutation
The Principle: "There is no such thing as a good or bad emotion; there are only stuck emotions." (Lillian Bridges). Stuck emotions waste chi and burn jing.
The Method: Use triggers as opportunities for growth by examining the "ammo" (underlying wounds) instead of reacting.
Process: Trigger → Meaning → Emotion → Behavior.
The Mechanism: Neuroplasticity allows the brain to be rewired. Tools like breathwork and shadow work enable this transmutation, shifting the individual from a maladaptive state to one of presence and healing.
