Marketing technology - what's going to be big next
Daniel Priestly has long said that US elections are a great guide as to what's going to be big next in terms of marketing trends. From newspapers and radio to TV and then to social media, US elections have been won using popular and trending technology at the time.
Daniel pointed out a while ago how Obama monopolised social media, and now Trump has dominated podcasts. Here's what Daniel has said recently:
"The 2024 Election was the moment long-form podcasts became a serious communication strategy to win elections. Here are the numbers:
Kamala Harris
Total Podcasts - 5
Total YouTube Views - 4M
Total Watch Time Available - 3 hours
Donald Trump
Total Podcasts - 14
Total YouTube Views - 124M
Total Watch Time Available - 17 hours
I expect to see top business leaders scrambling to get onto a decent podcast in 2025 and many companies will launch their own with a hefty budget behind it.
Voters/Consumers don't trust much of what they see and hear online now. They want to see the leader of the organisation speaking in an unfiltered, unedited, unpolished way."
We underestimate the power of audio (even though many podcasts also have video) at our peril. I have a family member who has been in radio for his entire career and he has always said how powerful it is at cutting through to audiences.
