How about writing a book...!
"Quick and 'fun'?" I hear you laughing!
Hear me out.
During a couple of our one to ones in our Adviser Book Writing Group, we have explored the concept of a 'Micro Book' and so I thought I would share some thoughts here for you on what this is and how you can use it.
As we have said a few times already, standing out as an authority is more crucial than ever, so traditionally, many people turn to writing lengthy books to establish their expertise and attract clients.
However, there’s a new and possibly more efficient alternative: the Micro Book.
What is a Micro Book?
You can probably guess the answer, but let's spell it out.
A Micro Book is a compact, focused book typically ranging from 20 to 50 pages.
That's all, 20 to 50 pages.
It’s designed to deliver valuable, actionable content quickly and efficiently. Unlike traditional books, which can take a little while to write, a Micro Book can be completed in just a few days.
Why Choose a Micro Book Over a Traditional Book?
I'm not saying that either approach is wrong or right. I'm saying this is another alternative - one that might just suit some of you on holiday right now...
1. Speed and Simplicity:
- Quick Creation: Micro Books can be written and published in a fraction of the time it takes to create a full-length book. This means you can start leveraging your book to attract clients much sooner.
- Focused Content: With a Micro Book, you focus on delivering a specific, actionable insight or piece of advice. This targeted approach ensures your readers gain immediate value, enhancing your reputation as an expert.
2. Enhanced Engagement:
- Attention Span: In today’s fast-paced world, potential clients often don’t have the time or patience to read lengthy tomes. A concise Micro Book respects their time while still providing them with valuable insights.
- Immediate Impact: By delivering quick wins and practical advice, you keep your readers engaged and more likely to follow through with your recommendations.
3. Cost-Effective Marketing:
- Lower Costs: Producing a Micro Book requires fewer resources, both in terms of time, energy and money. This makes it an ideal marketing tool for financial advisers looking to maximise their return on investment.
- High Conversion Rates: Micro Books are excellent lead magnets. Their focused nature means they attract readers who are genuinely interested in your expertise, leading to higher conversion rates from readers to clients.
- It's still a book! A book is a book is a book - whether 200 pages or just 20 - no one is going to criticise you for getting your expertise out there in writing.
4. Building Authority:
- Expert Status: Authors are often perceived as authorities in their field. By publishing a Micro Book, you can quickly establish yourself as an expert, without the prolonged effort associated with something more substantial.
- Scalability: A well-crafted Micro Book can reach thousands of potential clients, expanding your influence far beyond that which traditional financial adviser marketing methods can achieve.
Simplicity of Approach
Writing a Micro Book is straightforward and can be broken down into simple steps:
1. Identify Your Big Idea: Choose a specific topic or insight that you want to share with your audience.
Ensure it’s something that provides immediate value and addresses a common pain point. 'Pain is good' when it comes to Micro Books...
2. Outline Your Content: Create a clear outline to ensure your content flows logically. Focus on delivering your message in a concise and impactful manner.
3. Record Your Insights: Instead of laboriously typing out your content, consider recording your thoughts. This can make the process faster and more natural.
4. Professional Editing and Design [not essential by any means though a good idea]: Consider hiring a professional editor to polish your text and a designer to create an attractive layout and cover. This ensures your Micro Book looks professional and is engaging to read.
5. Publish and Promote: Once your Micro Book is ready, publish it digitally on Amazon and start promoting it through your existing channels. Use it as a lead magnet to attract potential clients. Get it onto your website and everywhere you have a presence online.
Whilst technically not a Micro Book, my shortest book Kick-Start Your Career With LinkedIn is 66 pages long and took about a day to write and another half day to finesse. It started as a PowerPoint presentation to some sixth-form students which I then expanded into a book. I edited it myself and had someone on Fiverr do the cover.
Use the PowerPoint approach to put it together. Imagine that you have been asked to give a presentation to your target market tomorrow. Open up PowerPoint and put the slide deck together - and hey presto you have the basis of your book.
Although Kick-Start Your Career With LinkedIn is a slim book, most of the sales are in bulk where a school will ask for multiple copies to give to students. And yes, most of them take it home - sometimes parents will see it and I'll get an invitation to speak or run a training session at their company.
So yes, even a Micro Book open doors.
Conclusion
In the world of financial advice, a Micro Book offers a compelling alternative to traditional book writing. It’s quicker to produce, highly engaging, cost-effective and an excellent tool for building your authority.
By embracing the Micro Book approach, you can efficiently showcase your expertise and attract high-quality clients, all while delivering immediate value to your readers.
There isn't a financial adviser in the land who couldn't write a Micro Book - what a great Summer project that could be for you...
