If I showed you all a red card and then I slapped you, you would be like, "Whoa." If I don't say anything and then I show you a red card and then I slap you again, you're still surprised. Then, if I show you a red card and you duck, that's a new behavior under the same conditions. If it takes one person ten times to duck when they see the red card and another person ducks the second time they see it, the second person is smarter; they are more intelligent than the person who takes ten tries. Many of you here might think you are really smart, but when you go back home to the same conditions and do the exact same thing, it raises the question: how smart are you? By defining intelligence in this way, it actually makes it something under our control. However, if you leave here and your behavior doesn't change in the same conditions, it indicates that you learned nothing.

Intelligence shows in how quickly you change behavior. You can learn but if you keep doing the same things, you remain stuck. Real progress happens when you adapt and act differently.
