Motivating Employees Through Visionary Leadership
In the video "How Steve Jobs Kept Great Employees" from Leila Hormozi, I think that when you're quantifying what he did here, like why is it that when he came in as a leader, people wanted to stay at the company? I think that's because the job of a leader, or the number one thing that they give others in the company, is reinforcement that they're on the right path toward a mission. He has this big mission; he's iterating it, he's communicating it, he's providing people clarity, and then giving them reinforcement as to if they're on the right path to get there. That's what a great leader does. Oftentimes, when the founder or the person that had the great big ideas in the first place disappears, the big vision, the big mission, and the very visceral why that people can feel in the company disappears as well. It's the intangible that people can't measure, but it's ultimately the most important reason as to why people stick in the organization. It’s if they feel like you have such a big compelling vision that it's worth them saying there is their runway for them in their career within your vision. Oftentimes, someone like Steve Jobs is going to be really hard to substitute with anybody with anything close.
Great leaders create a vision that excites people. They communicate clearly and reinforce the mission, keeping everyone aligned and motivated. When vision fades, so does the team's commitment.
In her compelling discussion, Leila Hormozi highlights how Steve Jobs instilled a strong sense of purpose within Apple’s workforce, motivating employees to stay committed and engaged. By creating a clear vision that resonated emotionally, Jobs fostered an environment where team members felt aligned with a meaningful mission. This approach not only emphasized the importance of an inspiring leader but also underscored how a compelling narrative can enhance employee retention, providing clarity and direction that is often crucial for engagement in high-performing teams.
