Be a Hollow Bone
Frank Fools Crow, the revered Lakota holy man, often taught that the more humble and unselfish a person becomes, the more willing Wakan Tanka — the Great Mystery — is to work through them. He called this state “being a hollow bone,” a powerful image that reminds us that true spiritual strength comes not from ego, but from openness.
In Lakota tradition, a hollow bone is clean, empty, and ready for sacred purpose. Fools Crow believed that when we let go of pride, fear, and the need for control, we make space for wisdom, compassion, and healing to flow through us. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about being willing. Willing to listen. Willing to learn. Willing to serve something greater than ourselves.
Imagine standing on the plains at sunrise, the world quiet except for the wind moving through the grass. In that stillness, you can feel what Fools Crow meant: that when we stop trying to fill every moment with our own noise, we become channels for guidance, courage, and clarity.
This teaching invites us to live with softer hearts and clearer intentions. To act with generosity. To let humility be our strength. And to remember that the greatest power often comes when we step aside and allow the sacred to move through us.
