I see the Chinese origins in Goju Ryu.
What I like about Yushukan Goju Ryu is that it has some similarities to other styles I have practiced. While these videos are copies of an old VHS tape, you may see some moves that look like Goju Ryu kata. These two are Wing Chun Sui Lim Tao, and Jow Gar (a blend of Hung Gar and Choi li Fut) Little Tiger forms. These are the foundation forms of those styles. I admit though, that the attention to detail in Yushukan is like no other style I have practiced, and I like that challenge.

Hey cam - R U standing next to Dan Inosante in the last photo. Great to see when older people maintain the thirst to go on.
The right answer
I heard an interesting question asked by a novice about how long it takes an ordinary person to get their black belt. The answer was " ordinary people don't get to black belt". Probably not what they wanted to hear, but what they needed to hear. Don't be ordinary.

Like most older practitioners, the key should be to keep training with respect to the "DO" ie the way of Karate, & this is different for each individual. While many of us remember what we could do in our 20's, you must respect age & train to your current ability.Trying to replicate your 20's ability in older age, will definitely leave you with injuries you never had & take along time to recover from. Most older Karate practitioners have all done this & paid the price, including myself. I started karate by the way of filling in time at Nth Sydney TAFE college in between classes. Budokan karate was being taught there (1979). I was lucky I had natural flexibility, making improvement easy. Next year at TAFE there was no karate so I started Goshinryu karate in Manly, stayed with them for 5 years but also trained with Budokan in Sydney. I was told I had to pick which style I wanted to move forward with, so I continued on with Budokan untill 1994. Did train with many other style for short periods while on work extensions. Restarted training Goju with Sensi Sam at age 59 until present. I'm so glad I made the effort, as it's a pleasure to train with Sensi Sam in Yushukan. When we were young.
