Career Report: Interview/Client Questions on the Electricity Grid
A new Career report has been uploaded to the Classroom section (6.3 - Career Reports). This Q&A guide includes common questions about electricity grids. Very useful for preparing for job interviews or confidently answering client questions as an energy consultant. For example:

Commodities Report: Copper Prices Are Rising
A new Energy Industry report has been uploaded to the Classroom section (6.2 - Industry Reports). This report examines the growing gap between copper supply and demand, driven by AI data centers, renewable energy grids, and military spending, while existing mines age and new deposits become increasingly rare and difficult to develop. The structural deficit prediction for 2030 is only six years away, which is remarkably soon.
Data Science + ML + Optimisation Careers
Can you share some combinations of Online Courses to take, for the career pathway of Data Science for Energy and/or ML for energy and/or Optimisation for energy?

Yes for Optimization I took 4.1 , which is Per Unit System, and 4.4 which is Intro to Optimisation alongside 5.1 (Technical Characteristics of Power Stations) to build the technical foundation for all optimization courses.
Hello everyone! I'm new here.
Hi everyone, I’m a Senior Software Engineer with over 10 years of experience in the IT field. I’m currently working with a U.S. based client, focusing on building scalable and high-performance web applications. I’m excited to be here and look forward to connecting and learning with you all.

Pyomo vs Xpress vs GAMS
For Optimisation, which of these coding languages are you using and why ? In the Classroom, all three approaches are taught : Python (using Pyomo), Xpress and GAMS. Each, is used to develop an optimisation model. Is there a better one? Is one for academia and one for industry?

GAMS is fantastic when you want to think directly in terms of sets, parameters and equations. So this is why it is so popular in academic power-system and energy models. Xpress/Mosel feels closer to a full programming language and is used in operations research groups in companies. Python/Pyomo is in between and is probably the best choice if you want one language that does almost everything

Here is the thing. Licensing is one of the main practical differences: Python/Pyomo is open-source, whereas GAMS and Xpress are commercial environments. That is one reason universities often like Pyomo and GAMS (academic licences) and companies like Xpress and Python (integration with existing IT). But technically all three can handle serious power-system optimisation problems.
