Hello - Shelly here from Excell Motorsports, located in the Hamilton, NY area. Due to our rural location, it’s a challenge to find technicians. Often when we find one, they want high wages and we are unable to charge the labor rates other dealerships may charge to help offset that kind of overhead. I often use LinkedIn, Indeed or word of mouth to find employees. Happy fall everyone.
22 Ways to Turn Your Job Ad into a Technician Magnet!
Here are 22 ways independent auto repair shops can make their ads pull more applications from skilled technicians: 1. Use Attention-Grabbing Headlines - How to do it: Start with a short, benefit-driven headline. - Example: "Automotive Technicians: Family-Owned Shop (Earn up to $125K / No Weekends / AC) - Why it works: Techs quickly see the ad is for them and the key benefits that matter to them. 2. Be Transparent About Pay - How to do it: Include a specific salary range or hourly rate. - Example: "$80k –$120k/year based on experience, plus bonuses." - Why it works: Clear pay shows your respect for their time and skill and positions this post as a legitimate job offer. 3. Emphasize Work-Life Balance - How to do it: Highlight schedule perks like no weekends or predictable hours. - Example: "Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM. Spend weekends with family." - Why it works: Many techs value their personal time as much as pay. 4. Mention Career Growth Opportunities - How to do it: Outline advancement options like becoming a lead tech or shop foreman. - Example: "We promote from within. Clear path to management." - Why it works: Growth opportunities signal long-term career stability. 5. Mention Paid Training and Certification Reimbursement - How to do it: Include details on tuition reimbursement or paid ASE certifications. - Example: "We cover ASE test fees and provide paid time off for training." - Why it works: Shows you're invested in their professional development. 6. Promote Shop Culture - How to do it: Describe your team dynamic and shop environment. - Example: "Collaborative, drama-free team. We celebrate wins together." - Why it works: Techs want a workplace where they feel respected and supported. 7. Showcase Benefits That Matter - How to do it: List perks like health insurance, PTO, or tool stipends. - Example: "$500 annual tool allowance, health insurance, 2 weeks PTO." - Why it works: Benefits beyond salary can be a deciding factor.
