TEFL with Teacher Record
Hi. I really enjoyed the webinar with Brett and Clive yesterday, very informative. I'm considering getting a TEFL even though I don't have a BSc/BA (I only have a CertHE) as I think it would still help employment prospects. I came across a website called Teacher Record where it says you can do a 120 hour TEFL course with an e-Certificate for free. This seems like a scam to me but some searching online suggested it wasn't a scam and they are a legitimate company. Does anyone have any experience with them? I would've thought you'd need to pay for a course. If they are a scam, what providers would people recommend to obtain a TEFL to teach online? https://teacherrecord.com/tefl-certificate

@Clive Kingshott I couldn’t find any reliable reviews for that free website and I think it kind of locked you in to doing work with them, perhaps just Chinese students exclusively. I found a UK company called TEFL Universal that offered a TEFL (150 hours) and TEYL (60 hours) course for £34 in total. They claim to be accredited and had a lot of good reviews on Trustpilot, didn’t look like bots. People reported using their TEFLs to get jobs online and in Thailand. Some other courses are hundreds of dollars with mixed reviews. I’m going to finish these two courses in between all my Muay Thai training, my deadline is 21st July on the website, and then I can start looking for jobs online. Not sure how it will work with teaching hours around my training until September, but I’ll get these courses finished first and figure it out. 😊

@Adam Jones Thanks for the help. I’m not planning on teaching in a classroom in Thailand as I would need to change visa, I still have nearly 5 years validity left on this one. Normally, if you get the relevant visa through your employer, if you quit your job or are fired, you have one week to leave Thailand. I think I’d prefer to teach online but might one day look at teaching in Cambodia. I think officially, to stick to the law, you need a BSc or BA to teach in a classroom in Thailand, some just bend the rules, I’ve heard. Yeah, I might have to get my qualifications verified or notarised when I apply for jobs.
The biggest LIE they tell you about moving abroad (total BS)
For YEARS I've been watching people put off their dream of living abroad for a couple of reasons. This post will be the first of many attempting to address them. "You don't have the knowledge or skill set to make it work." Total. Freaking. Nonsense. When people decide to have a baby, do they wait until they've figured out how to handle every single parenting challenge for the next 18 years? Hell no! They learn the basics, connect with other parents, and solve problems as they go. Moving abroad works EXACTLY the same way. And that's because the path becomes clearer once you're actually on it. But there's this weird belief that you need to have everything figured out before you take the first step. It's keeping way too many people stuck where they are. What do you think? Is this stopping you from making the move? Drop a comment and let me know if this resonates...or if I'm way off base. I'm genuinely curious what you think.

@Toby Barnes Yeah mate, that sounds wise. That six months will probably fly by anyway. I would advise having a proper stream of income first to cover living expenses and definitely plenty of savings, as others have said. I’m not trying to be a hypocrite as I only have moved with savings and a small income, my situation would maybe make more sense if I told the whole story but bit too personal (and probably boring to be fair). Always better to be cautious if you can afford to be. 👍🏼 Good luck to you. If you ever decide on Thailand, you’re welcome to DM me any time if you have any questions. I’m not an expert, like Brett, but I can warn you of a few pitfalls. 🙂

@Toby Barnes Happened to me. My original plan was to move in September last year but that move turned into just a holiday (plan was half-baked to be fair, my fault, although I have moved abroad, I’m not very good at it 😄). So, delaying a few months, it’ll go fast. Look at it as a positive as you can spend the time saving, growing your business and, if you get any free time, try to pick up some (Central) Thai. I’d recommend the Lonely Planet Thai phrasebook and dictionary and for learning the culture, Culture Shock Thailand by Robert Cooper was very interesting. They speak a different language in Chiang Mai (Northern Thai) but they will understand (Central) Thai.
Bank accounts in Thailand
Hi everyone. Just wondered if anyone has successfully managed to open a local bank account in Thailand and what they would recommend. Which bank is best? What helps not to get rejected as a foreigner?

@Simon Orgulan Thank you. I think I’ll try Bangkok Bank as a few have reported success with them. I’ll try a few times, if I keep getting rejected, I’ll hire a solicitor/attorney. I’ve heard Siam Legal do it. I’m on a DTV but that’s still technically a Tourist Visa, so, I dunno. If I had an account, wouldn’t transfer loads of money, not everything.

@Nathan Von Fumetti Thanks. I just got my visa online on the eVisa portal. I’ll try myself a few times, try to speak in Thai and show my 6 month accommodation booking. I probably will get rejected but I’ll try. Would be easier rather than carrying cash all the time or paying foreign card fees.
Are you getting, or on, the DTV Visa
Guys, if any of you are looking at the DTV I've been to a few government-led events on it since it launched and got to know some of the team who designed it. Chatted to one at an event in Chiang Mai on Friday and go to ask questions that most people are guessing about and making wrong assumptions over. Happy to chat to anyone in the community if you are thinking about it. I'm not on it and not planning to be atm, but write about it in my newsletter quite often so feel as up to date as most and can clear up a few of the main questions they are not (purposely I might add) answering in the official channels.

@Nathan Von Fumetti Yeah, that’s true, thanks for looking out for me but I figured that the damage was already done (potentially) as they were already missed. I wouldn’t lie anyway if they asked me as they could just check with the school. I was just curious whether to force myself to go next time, if I get ill again. If they were being really strict like that, then maybe I could just tell the trainers and take it very easy. Shame, there doesn’t seem to be official information at all online.

@Nathan Von Fumetti Also, they don’t seem to keep a track of attendance officially, I don’t think anyone is on the Education Visa and there never seems to be a roll call or anything similar. I’m guessing missing the odd session is okay if a genuine reason but they probably would question it if someone missed weeks of training with no comment. I’ll update if I find anything else out, in case it’s useful for others. 👍🏼
Aussies, don't go to the UK...😂
Come to Asia instead!

I’m born and raised in the UK, grew up and lived in Solihull for 33 years (apart from a couple of years at uni in York). Only actually visited London properly once… once was enough. 😄

NB nothing against Cockneys, my grandfather grew up in London. I just meant the city itself wasn’t for me. 🙂
