This is a great example for what Seth Godin calls "The Dip" (which I consider mostly a measurement problem, rather than a "real" phenomenon - but that is a different discussion). People stop when they get the feeling that they are stagnating, and therefore they drop everything. But every complex system is a slowly evolving process, that needs a lot of time to get the myriad of interacting elements in place to take off. Lets take one example all of us went through - human development: 1) The first few minutes are exciting and a lot of experience is happening --> fertilization of the egg 2) Then comes the dip --> Not much is happening for the first couple of weeks 3) Second trimester --> Oh something is happening 4) Third trimester --> Huge belly, mom cant walk because so much is happening all at once 5) After Birth --> Now things are becoming crazy and 2 people have to take care 24/7 of what was not even percieveable for the first few weeks...
