Pricing - the perennial question
I am being hired by a UK Charity to facilitate a 5 hour session in London. A one-off. They want a quote from me. Even after some years, I still find it hard to estimate how long it will take, to think through and design exercises for a workshop. I find it hard to know, at the beginning of the process, how complex it is going to be and how much head space it is going to occupy in the coming weeks. And how to charge for the 'dead time' ... the time when one finds oneself thinking about the meeting while walking the dog or driving the car. Questions for you: ** how do you estimate the number of days it will take for ‘preparation and design’? ** do you quote a set fee for a job, or do you quote by day rate and estimate days? How do you set prices? What conversations do you have, with yourself and/or with the client? Big thanks in advance! James

@Emmanuel Setyawan this makes a lot of sense, thank you for reply. Curious to know how you 'pivoted to more profitable solutions' ... do you mean you started approaching corporate clients? or you created more higher ticket products?

@Mark Monaghan thank you for this comment, really helpful. I charged them a set fee, that I was happy with. They never blinked. I like where you say that 'this figure can change over time, as your experience and confidence grows', yes. Do you have set fees or do you use day rates?
Facilitating a Discussion on 'Company Values' - any ideas?
Has anyone ever facilitated a workshop session on 'Company Values'? I am seeking ideas. This would be an initial brainstorm/discussion for a staff team of 20, on the values that the organisation wants to align with. I have two hours. The organisation doesn't have a set of Values written out so they want to initiate a meaningful process to get input from staff on values, organisational culture, ways of working etc. Has anyone travelled this road before? :) Thank you!

Big thanks to everyone who jumped on this thread about Company Values facilitation. Some very helpful input and resources shared, it was much appreciated and very interesting to see how you would all do it. What I actually did was: -general introduction from me about ‘Values’ and what they mean to organisations -introduction from the CEO about why a set of Values will be important for this company going forward -people then wrote down (on their own) ‘values-related’ words or short phrases that inspired them. I asked them prompt questions to get them thinking ie what is important to you? what words describe the company when it is working at its best? etc -people then shared their words with a colleague and discussed further -I then wrote lots of the words and phrases suggested on a big whiteboard so they were visible to the whole room -I also then gave some examples of Values adopted by companies working in the same field… -with all this information/inspiration, we broke into small groups and each group was tasked with writing a set of 5 values for the Company. Just for fun, to get them discussing the subject and to see what gold might come out of it. -groups fed back and whole room voted on most popular phrases suggested. What I found was: -it was good to spend time setting the scene and showing examples of Values from other companies -the initial wordstorm generated some good starting points and discussion -it was still hard for many people to fully grasp what was meant by ‘Values’ -some groups wrote sets of Values that weren’t really Values, they were more like mission statements or campaign goals… more like what the organisation wanted to achieve, rather than what it stood for. -2 hours not enough! -The Company just wanted an initial brainstorm rather than a concrete decision, so it was perfectly OK. -I would have liked more time to discuss what Values might mean to the Company in reality ie in their day-to-day ways of working. Maybe that is for a second session.
