I fear drowning. I’ve completely given up though. My legs are out of proportion with my upper body and my body centre of gravity is probably in my knees. It’s easier if I avoid water altogether.

@Meredith Barrington so a bit of background. It’s not through lack of trying. Been learning to swim for almost 2 years. When I do laps in a 50m pool I do a flip turn at 35m instead of 50m because I’m afraid of the deep end. I also really struggled with the breast stroke kick. Reason I say this is because if try and do a vertical breast stroke while I’m up right it’s almost like doing the frog treading technique. Also I’ve got a floatation belt but I’m yet to use it. In all honesty I’m too embarrassed to use it at the local pool. . I may as well be wearing a big rubber ducky floaty around my waste. I know I have to get past that though. It’s designed to gradually reduce the pads so I use the belt less and more on my technique. With the diaphragm breathing though it doesn’t make sense to me. Most people can easily have normal conversations while treading water and they’re not focused on the breathing at all or are they just doing subconsciously to hold air in their lungs. They’re laughing, singing having completely normal conversations while treading. Other people who I see tread don’t even move their legs. They just wade their arms through the water while also being 5 times the size of me. Perhaps because they’re fat it adds extra buoyancy for them.
