From Waste to Wealth A powerful story of courage, purpose, and African innovation. Yaa Priscilla Birago left the comfort of Canada, where she worked as a tech consultant, to return home and build Soko Bags a female-led eco-empire in Ghana. She started with just 2 machines and 2 employees, producing only 8,000 bags in her first year. Today, her team produces over 80,000 eco-friendly bags a year, made from discarded cocoa sacks, replacing more than 40 million plastic bags. With 80% of her workforce being women, Yaa is proving that manufacturing and agriculture can create real, sustainable jobs right here in Ghana. Her words say it best: “Manufacturing agriculture is the way to go in Ghana… Innovation doesn’t need to come from Silicon Valley. Sometimes it rises from the red clay of Accra. Her journey wasn’t easy she was told she had “traded a Mercedes for a bicycle,” faced moments of doubt, and even cried. But she stayed the course and is now shipping her sustainable bags to Canada, Bermuda, Uganda, Togo, and beyond. This is more than a business story. It’s proof that one bold decision, one conversation, and one vision can create real impact. Thank you for sharing these inspiring Diaspora Conversations. Stories like Yaa’s remind us that coming home to build is not just possible it’s powerful. ’What part of Yaa’s story inspires you the most? Would you return home to build something meaningful?
