OK! I dared myself to get the ball rolling on the Cool Composting YTChannel
Lately, I’ve been on a bit of a vermicomposting craze, teaching and demonstrating the wonders of worm composting to audiences both young and old! Much of this has happened because people have been reaching out to me, asking me to share what I’ve learned. And I love it! Today, a friend in California texted me asking for help setting up his worm bin. That’s when I felt a big nudge to step outside my comfort zone and just GO FOR IT! Within five minutes, I gathered a handful of supplies, set up my camera, and recorded an uncut video. (Yep, that’s because I haven’t learned how to edit videos yet!) Then I figured out how to upload and post it on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfuTdJxJdac There! I did it! 🎉🐛 Sure, the video has its flaws. There are things I wish I had mentioned, and I’m sure I’ll think of a dozen more things I could have done differently. But that’s okay! We all have to start somewhere, and we learn as we go. I’m reminding myself that I don’t have to be perfect to share something valuable. Sometimes, we just need to take that first step, embrace the imperfections, and see where the journey leads. Here’s to new adventures, learning along the way, and helping more people discover just how COOL composting with worms can be! 🌱🐛 Let’s Compost!

Precompost experiment
Pictured is a patch of hardy begonia's that grow at my front porch. I broke em down and removed the seed pods, chopped the leafs finely and broke the stems into 2-3 inch pieces, added 2 starbucks bags of coffee grounds, 10 gallons of shredded cardboard, 2 gallons of dried shredded daylily stalks and 2 gallons of veggie slop(one had cooked ground rice in it) from the freezer. No extra amendments @Rick Redding or @Cherene Packard just what my yard, amazon and Starbucks have provided. Research says the green stalks from the begonias are both a brown(carbon) and green(nitrogen). Lets see what kinda heat this mess will bring. Any guesses?

72 hrs, dropped to 102° will turn it thus afternoon and see what a 2nd cycle brings. I'm curious to see what those green stalks have done in 3 days
Looking to get started — again
Hey everyone, I'm Santos. I grow in zone 6b, Pennsylvania, natural farming style. I tried worm farming once before and lost them all — my bedding was too dry and I didn't know how to take care of them yet. This time I'm starting small: a medium tote and a couple dozen red wigglers, with the bedding prepped first like Cherene teaches. I'm here to learn and do it right this time, because castings are a big piece of what I want for my garden and soil life. Also, does Walmart regularly carry red wigglers, or is it hit and miss? And any beginner mistakes I should watch for in the first two weeks?

Welcome to the group @Santos Colon Not sure what kind of worms you'll get from Walmart but @Cherene Packard and @Rick Redding both sell starter colony size red wiggs that I can personally vouch for being of superb quality and pure bred red wigglers. What kind of natural growing do you do? KNF, JADAM, Organic Living soil or something else? I do a lot of organic living soil gardening both indoors and out which is what got me into worm farming as well. Initially I remember the worms wanting to escape because I hadn't prepared the bedding properly in advance. Great having you in the group and look forward to learning alongside each other. 😁🪱💩😁

@Santos Colon I wouldn't be a suitable teacher for either of those as I'm only somewhat familiar with them, mostly KNF. However I do plan on making JLF this winter from daylily blades. Have you been watching any of Chris Trump or Youngsang Cho's YouTube videos? We can learn a lot together
Lunchtime!
It’s a sunshiny day and my Squigglies are doing great! Surprisingly active despite the dipping temperatures at night. 😍 Just emptied my compost jar…watermelon continues to be their favorite treat.

Resiliency!!!
Do you think our little squirmy friends are resilient? They have no brain, no skeleton, no lungs, no face not even a centralized heart. They can't possibly be very resilient can they? Contraire Mon Fre're, the lil guys in the pics(few you can see) left San Antonio Tx on Sept 29th, made it to Shertz Tx that same day and started a sight seeing journey towards Memphis Tn over the next 5 days. Decided they liked Tennessee so well they spent 4 days slooooowwwly making their way to Knoxville Tennessee where they liked it so much they spent 8 days(must have caught a Vols football game) before finally arriving to their new home in Pineville, Ky. Its quite possible they have become some of the most well traveled and culturally diverse worms in the country. With all that said I didn't find 1 single dead worm and they weren't really skinny looking. If thats not resilient I dont know what is. I don't think I could pack enough stuff in my truck to travel as much as they have for thus amount of time and not be starved and strung out. Thanks a bunch @Cherene Packard they made it!!!!
