Trying to do a mindfulness painting.
I have been struggling since my dog passed in December, and have been using (well, trying to)painting to cope. The other day I put all my paints in a paper bag and randomly selected them. I don’t have any image in mind to paint, since those colors don’t seem to mesh. I tried to do a technique I saw online and this is the mess/background I have to work with. Any tips on how to get the creative juices flowing? Thank you

I just lost my brother, so I understand your reluctance to make it pretty. It's super fresh for me, and I'm just beginning to think about what I might want to create. So, with that lens in mind... What if the focus was to leave the painting as it is now, and add geometric shape outlines on that background, while thinking about how your dog made you feel a year ago? Sort of making an abstract picture of your love for your pet?

When I'm in a melancholy mood, like now, I use a mixture of soft rock. I'm also fond of a custom mixture of new age music a friend created for me. The type of music affects the artistic outcome. Sometimes, I just want quiet, like Carl.

Day 2: The Missing Skill 🎨Discover what’s actually lacking🎨 Take your Day 1 drawing. Look at it differently. Break it down into simple shapes. ✍🏻Circle what feels “off.” This is where most people stay stuck because they never identify the real problem. Today, you will by taking a closer look at your art. 👀

Same drawing, right vertical has been corrected, and the shapes noted. the ovals in the larger version, but unless I use a French curve, I'm not sure how to get them perfect.

It looks like more tools are going to make their way to my office from what my spouse calls my "art room". Maybe it's time to get him to look for unwanted guests in that room (I haven't been in there for a couple of years, other than to grab materials for here) and move everything back upstairs, where my drawing table and the rest of my tools live. It's got everything I need, even the northern light. I think it's time.

Day 1: Why You Feel Stuck Most artists think they’re stuck because they need more practice. That’s not the problem. Most people don’t improve because they repeat the same mistakes—not because they lack talent. So what happens? You: • Don’t know what to draw • Or you draw a lot… but nothing changes • Or you start and quit halfway through It feels like effort—but it’s not progress. Today we fix that. Exercise: Draw something the way you normally would. No overthinking. No “trying to be better.” Just draw. Then look at it and ask: What’s actually off? Be specific: Is it proportions?Placement?Shapes?Something feels “wrong” but you don’t know why? That’s your starting point. This challenge isn’t about drawing more. It’s about finally seeing what’s been holding you back. Share your drawing and tell me ONE thing you notice. Tomorrow, I’ll show you exactly what to do with it.

I noticed that at least one vertical line was at an unnatural angle. Created the shapes and updated the one line. Here is the original.
