Plan your training sessions. Have a goal. Sharpen something small a little bit each time. Don’t try to sharpen everything all the time. Once in a while try to sub everyone as many times as you can. But for the most part, focus on kaizen. A little bit better everyday. When I trained for 4-6 hours a day and competed a lot, I would have a technique or 2 that I would decide to practice each class. When I inevitably messed it up and ended up with you on my back, no big deal. I was confident in my escape and my ability to get back to the spot where I need to be to try the technique again. It makes sense in the beginning to focus on pin escapes and sweeps because that’s where you are likely to be at any given moment. As a beginner, most of your time will be under side control or some other pin. Don’t fight it. Embrace it. Build that comfort in darkness. Escape and then let yourself be put back into the pin and try again. Until it’s reflexive.
