Burger Chains Paying $20/Hr While Auto Techs Average $24.97 Nationwide.😳
The numbers don't lie. According to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the average auto technician in the US earns just $24.97 per hour. I know, I know, it's probably much higher in your area but stick with me here. Meanwhile, fast food joints like 5 Guys Burgers are offering $20/hr starting wages, plus perks like free meals and tips. I took a picture of the "we're hiring" sign from my local 5-Guys Burger joint here in California but I can't get it to send from my phone so I won't be posting it here. Sorry about that! Anyways... Let that sink in. A measly $4.97 per hour separates burger flippers from skilled mechanics. To be clear, we aren't talking about certified master technicians or A-Techs with advanced diagnostic skills but still, is it any wonder why shops are struggling to find and keep techs? "The industry is in dire straits. When someone can earn almost as much slapping together burgers as they can busting knuckles, you know we've got a serious problem on our hands," laments one shop owner. To read the full story on TireBusiness.com and discover how this shocking pay discrepancy is fueling a nationwide mechanic shortage, click the link below. ⬇️ Average hourly wage for techs increased by $1.08 🔒 Note: The full article is behind a paywall and requires a subscription to access. If I ever get that darned 5-Guys help wanted picture to share from my phone, I'll add it to this post. It's a real gem! #AutoRepair #FastFood #Wages #MechanicShortage #BurgerFlippers

This is why we need to raise our prices! If you’ve bought fast food lately, you’ve seen the prices go through the roof and it’s because they’re paying these employees so much money to do menial jobs. I do believe that we should pay our employees more, even entry-level employees. Coming into this industry only making $15-$16 an hour does not incentivize young people to want to do this. It is a tough industry. It’s all about passion if they don’t have passion they’re not gonna wanna do it for such a low amount. But, if a kid has some technical ability, they’re more likely to become a plumber or electrician because they can make so much more money in less time with less investment. Unfortunately, most technicians don’t make six figures, you have to be good. You have to be really good to make six figures or more and it’s a lot of work and time put in to get there. Other trades can make six figures in a relatively short amount of time. To save our industry and make it thrive we’re going to have to pay more and we’re gonna have to charge more and we’re going have to be able to justify that to our customers.
