Magic of Nettles mini-course 😆
🌿 I am honestly SO excited about this Magic of Nettles mini-course 🍃 The deeper I go into creating it, the more I’m falling in love with nettles all over again. Not just as food or medicine… but as a plant that nourishes entire ecosystems, supports our bodies so deeply, and reconnects us with the old ways of seasonal living 🌱 Every time I add a new lesson, recipe, or reflection, I keep thinking: “I can’t wait for everyone to unlock this magic for themselves.” And honestly… who knew one humble “weed” could hold SO much wisdom?! So let’s have a little fun 👇 Drop a GIF in the comments that expresses how excited you are to unlock the course 😂🌿✨ AND while you’re here:🍃 like people’s comments🍃 reply to each other🍃 cheer one another on because every interaction helps each other move closer to Level 3 and unlock the course together 🌱 I genuinely love seeing this community come alive like this 💚

@Helen Cadd Nettles are dioecious, meaning the male and female flowers grow on separate plants — which is where the Latin name Urtica dioica comes from. Occasionally you’ll come across plants that seem to show both male and female parts, which can be a bit confusing. This can happen with hybridisation or variation within populations, but they’re still perfectly fine to harvest and use. I always have a laugh on my courses when teaching how to ID, I say remember that male are erect, female are pendulous 😆

🌿 Understanding the Nervous System 🌿
Your nervous system was never designed for endless emails, traffic jams, social media, bills, and constant background stress. It was designed for survival. For most of human history, we lived as hunter gatherers, deeply connected to nature and dependent on our tribe for safety. Back then, danger was immediate and physical. A predator in the trees. A hostile tribe. A bear charging towards you through the forest. When this happened, the sympathetic nervous system would switch on automatically — what we often call fight or flight. In that moment, your body becomes entirely focused on survival: ⚡ your heart beats faster ⚡ your breathing quickens ⚡ muscles tense and prepare for action ⚡ digestion slows down ⚡ stress hormones flood the body ⚡ awareness sharpens onto the threat Your body isn’t thinking about long-term health or relaxation at this point. It’s thinking:“Stay alive.” And this response is incredible. It’s one of the reasons our species survived. But what’s important is what would happen next… If the bear was escaped, killed, or the danger passed, the nervous system would begin to settle again. You would return to the safety of your tribe, the fire, familiar faces, food, touch, rest. This is where the parasympathetic nervous system comes in — often called “rest and digest.” The body slowly receives the message:🌙 you are safe now Heart rate slows. Breathing deepens. Digestion returns. Muscles soften. The body begins repairing, healing, and restoring itself. The problem is that modern life can keep many of us stuck in low-level fight or flight almost constantly. Our nervous systems often react to: 📱 notifications 📧 work pressure 💬 conflict 💰 financial stress 🕰 rushing and overwhelm 👥 fear of judgement or rejection Even though there’s no bear chasing us through the forest… the body can still respond as though there is. And over time, this takes a toll. Learning about this system, and how to work with it, is something I’ve become deeply passionate about, and I’m currently creating some deeper nervous system reset courses and practices for the premium space, which I’ll share more about when they’re ready 🌿

🌙 The Magic of the Number 13 🌙
We’re taught from a young age that 13 is unlucky. Hotels skip it. Airplanes avoid it. People fear it. But what if 13 was never meant to be feared at all? What if it was once considered sacred? There are 13 moon cycles in a solar year.Traditionally, women would also bleed around 13 times a year, living much more closely to the rhythms of nature and the moon. Some believe that before our modern calendar, people followed a 13-month lunar calendar — one that aligned far more naturally with the cycles of the earth and sky. In fact, 13 moon cycles fit almost perfectly within a year, without the strange adjustments and leap years we now rely on. Over time, humanity became increasingly disconnected from the land, from seasonal living, and from the wisdom once passed through communities — especially through women. There’s a theory that the fear around the number 13 was part of that shift. That by making what was once sacred appear dangerous or unlucky, people became easier to separate from older ways of living, knowing, and gathering power outside of systems of control. Whether that’s literally true or symbolic, I think many of us can feel that something has been lost. The deep connection to the moon. The wisdom of the body. The understanding that we are part of nature — not separate from it. So maybe loving the number 13 can become its own small act of rebellion. 🌿 A quiet remembering.A reclaiming of rhythm, intuition, and the parts of ourselves that were taught to stay small, quiet, or disconnected. Not rebellion through anger —but through reconnection. Through gathering again.Learning again.Trusting ourselves again. 13 suddenly feels quite magical when you look at it that way ✨

@Laura Virgo Its pure empowerment, to heal ourselves, and feed ourselves. This was our normal, until we got taken away from our connection to the land, leaving us dependant on the people who decided they were in control.

@Helen Cadd Anything that connected us to the land and the natural rhythms was turned into something to be feared, herbalists are a perfect example, they became witches and burned, paganism was turned into devil worship. It was all about control. Women should lead the way back to the land :-)
Nettle Puree - Natures Superfood
Nettle season is one of my favourite times of year 🌱 Every spring I make big batches of nettle purée and freeze it in ice cube trays so I can enjoy it for months afterwards. In the morning I’ll often defrost a cube and spread it on toast — especially delicious topped with a poached egg 🍳Or I’ll throw a cube into casseroles, bolognaise, soups, or pasta sauces as an easy boost of nourishment. Nettle really is one of nature’s superfood. It’s particularly high in iron and vitamin C and packed with minerals — almost like a natural multivitamin growing freely around us. It can be used in so many dishes as a more nutritious alternative to spinach, and once cooked, the sting completely disappears. 🌿 My simple nettle purée recipe: • Fry one onion and a few garlic cloves gently in real butter• Add a pan full of rinsed nettle tops• Pour in a small cup of water• Wilt the nettles down for less than 5 minutes• Add a large dollop of butter and plenty of salt & pepper• Transfer to a food processor and blend until smooth Simple, nourishing, seasonal food 🌱 If you make it, I’d love to hear how you use yours too. 🌱 A little note: only harvest young nettle tops before the plant flowers or goes to seed. Once nettles begin flowering, the leaves can develop compounds that may irritate the kidneys, so it’s best to stop harvesting them for food at that stage.

@Helen Cadd When I teach on my wild food course, and we get to the nettle, it always gives me goosebumps. We have evolved with this mighty plant, so it is completely tuned in with us. 💚

@Vijaya Fatimathas happy hunting! Foraging is proven to release dopamine in the brain. Whenever we recognise a plant we are looking for, we have a little dopamine hit, then we gather mindfully, saying a little thank you to the plant, and take it home and cook up something nutritious, the process is sooo good for us. 💚
