New in the Classroom - Cordage and foraged basketry
We added a new course to the Classroom. Jason from A Great Alternative gave us permission to link his cordage series — and we're genuinely thrilled to include it. He's always experimenting with something interesting, and his filmmaking is next level. We'll keep building this course out as we all explore foraged basketry together. There's so much ground to cover — materials, methods, regional variations. Foraged basketry is best done as a village. Go to the Classroom tab and check it out.

Jason does a great job of showing his trial and error and evaluating the usefulness of each type of cordage.

Making cordage is not a craft for the impatient! But it is a pretty good TV time companion.
June Challenge - Nothing But Scraps🧺
Happy Monday weavers! Time for a fun challenge. Your mission: Weave a basket using nothing but scrap reed. Dig into that tangle and use what you've got — odd lengths, leftover colors, random bits. Any of these patterns work beautifully with scraps: - Scrappy Basket (especially great for color scraps) - Bread Basket - The Garlic (perfect for round reed scraps) - Hanging Vase Baskets - Tobacco Tray - Candle Lantern Or design your own. There are no rules here — just use what's already lying about, threatening to engulf you like a hydra.😂 When you're done, come back and post a photo. Let's see what you make.

Sun Hat Workshop is Here!
Hello lovely weavers! The Sun Hat workshop has just gone live, and just in time for the weekend! Woohoo! You can find it in the Classroom. The video sessions will guide you through the techniques you will need to complete your hat. You will need to rely on the instruction manual pretty heavily for sizing and for specific notes as you move through construction. I did my best to create an accurate size guide that will fit a wide range of sizes. Please note this is a guideline, not hard and fast rules as heads and hats can be many different shapes and sizing for this project isn't a precise science. If you run into problems feel free to share them in the Get Help community tab and I will do my best to assist you. Sharing photos of your issues is always super helpful. You can include photos in your question posts if you like. Thank you all for your excitement and patience for this workshop! I'm super excited to be sharing it. A lot of love and mental gymnastics went into making this one. Baskets don't usually have to end up being specific sizes, so it took all my garment construction experience to work out how to communicate creating a good fit😁. Happy weaving!

Look at you go! That is wonderful and a great idea to use it as a decoration. But if you wear it to church/brunch/a polo match😂 please, please take a photo of yourself and share.

@Anesha Knight You look like you're enjoying a leisurely morning on the veranda! Iced tea? Iced coffee? You look darling and stylish. I'm so glad it fits.
Question? Thinking outside the basket
What tool do you reach for that isn't officially a basket-weaving tool?

@Kelly Bertoli Oh, I see. Thanks for the photo. I'll have to get one to show people in class.
Harvest Basket
Tried my hand at another rib basket. Used a piece of bittersweet vine as the rim, seagrass and 1/4” flat reed for weavers. It was fun to let the basket evolve to what it wanted to be and not try to force a shape.

@Jessie Foster I looked it up, I guess we have it in the PNW too, it's a noxious weed (depending on the variety).

It seems some varieties are highly poisonous - I regret suggesting the basket as a fruit and vegetable vessel 🫢. I'll have to ask some of the local master weavers in my guild. I do love the way it forces a natural form.
