Do You Plan Trips Months Ahead… or Wing It?
Life can get busy so quickly. Between work, family, and everything else, planning time often feels like the last thing we get around to. I’m curious — how far ahead do you usually plan your next adventure or trip? Are you a months-in-advance, colour-coded itinerary person… or more of a last-minute, let’s see what happens traveller? No right or wrong — just interested in how everyone makes travel fit into real life ✨
Disney Through an Autistic Lens: Our Family’s Reality
We’ve just experienced the Disney course, and I wanted to share something honestly — especially for other families navigating travel with autistic children. This trip has been challenging for our grandson, who has autism. New places, new routines, unfamiliar sounds, crowds, waiting times, and constant change were a lot for him to process. Before the trip, I had a conversation with the travel agent. I was reassured that “everything will be fine.” But the reality was very different from how he was actually feeling. What I’ve learned is this: When someone says “it will be fine,” they often mean well — but they’re not inside a neurodivergent child’s body or nervous system. New places aren’t just “exciting.” They can be overwhelming. Time changes aren’t just “flexible.” They can feel unsafe. Crowds aren’t just “busy.” They can be painful. This trip reminded me how important it is for autistic needs to be truly understood — not just acknowledged. We did our best. We adjusted plans, took breaks, left early when needed, and focused on regulation over expectations. Some moments were beautiful. Some were hard. And all of it was real. If you’re a family travelling with an autistic child: 👉 You’re not doing it wrong if it’s hard 👉 It’s okay to slow down 👉 It’s okay if “magic” looks different for your family I’m sharing this not to discourage travel — but to encourage better conversations, better preparation, and more honest support for families like ours. You’re not alone 🤍

Thank you for asking, Brie — I really appreciate the question 🤍 Support looks different depending on the moment, but I’m happy to share what helps our grandson. For us, the biggest thing is regulation before expectations. We try to read his nervous system first, rather than pushing through a plan just because it was planned. Some of the supports we use include: - Predictability where possible – talking through what’s coming next in simple, clear language and avoiding last-minute changes when we can - Planned breaks – quiet time away from crowds, even if that means leaving early or missing something others might consider “important” - Sensory support – noise-reducing headphones, familiar comfort items, and choosing calmer spaces over high-stimulus ones - Flexible timing – following his pace, not the park’s pace - Permission to opt out – knowing it’s okay for him (and us) to step away without guilt if things become too much Most importantly, we focus on emotional safety. When he’s overwhelmed, we don’t try to fix the feeling — we validate it. Feeling safe and understood matters more than finishing an activity or “making the most of it.” Every autistic child is different, so what works for one family may not work for another. We’re still learning, adjusting, and doing the best we can with the information we have in the moment. I really appreciate you opening up this conversation — these are the kinds of honest discussions families like ours need more of 🤍
🌊✨ Next Stop: Disney Magic! ✨🌊
Hi everyone! I’m so excited to be here and to finally say it out loud — I’m about to embark on a Disney cruise adventure 🛳️🏰 This trip feels extra special because it’s one of those “wow, I’m actually doing this” moments. New places, new experiences, lots of food, plenty of Disney magic… and memories in the making 💫 I’ll be soaking up the views, the vibes, and probably a bit too much fun 😄 If you’ve ever done a Disney cruise (or dream of one), I’d love to hear: 👉 What was your favourite part — or what’s top of your Disney travel bucket list? Let the adventure begin! ✨
