There isn’t one “correct” way to welcome a new community member. Different communities use different approaches depending on their size, personality, and available time. For example: • A personal welcome post can celebrate the member and create a visible first conversation • A private DM can feel more personal and give them direction without putting them on display • A pinned Start Here post gives every member the same clear path and works well at scale • A recurring welcome thread can introduce several members without filling the feed • A live welcome or onboarding call can create connection in a higher-touch community • A combination can use one method for connection and another for direction The format matters less than what the welcome helps the member feel: • I’m in the right place • I can see how to begin • It feels safe to participate If you use public welcome posts, don’t repeat someone’s biography, application answers, business details, or private information. Give them room to introduce themselves in their own words. If you use DMs or a Start Here post, avoid overwhelming them with a sales pitch or ten different links. A welcome only works if the member notices it, understands it, and knows how to respond. How do you currently welcome new members? Public post, private DM, pinned Start Here post, recurring thread, live onboarding, a combination—or something else? Tell us what you use and why it fits your community. 👇
